View Full Version : Electric Fan/Relay Kit Question
1981gMachine 05-13-2007, 05:18:01 PM I'm looking at getting this electric fan (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10002&productId=759720&searchItemId=354284).
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/778-141-646.jpg
Because I'm thinking about this pulley kit (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10002&productId=764126&searchItemId=609327). And it doesn't look like my fan will bolt up to that water pump pulley.

Even if I don't get that pulley kit, I'm going to get an electric fan. I'm a lil lost on what wiring kit to get. Thinking about something like this (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10002&productId=744376&searchItemId=312446). But where on the block or head does this sensor go? Does it have to go on those 2 spots, rather then the radiator itself.
I'm open to ideas, what electric fan kits are you guys running? thx
andrew1977 05-13-2007, 05:35:25 PM i just put that fan in my car.... but i havnt got a relay kit yet either. my car isnt on the road so i dont run it for more then five min
jayb53guy 05-16-2007, 04:40:50 PM I used a kit from this guy:

Pretty cut and dry, easy to install. I used the plug on the block (have one on both iseded, one for the temp gauge itself, and one for the relays) and it works pretty good.
rindoze 05-16-2007, 05:15:27 PM I'm using a zirgo 3300 cfm fan I got on ebay and it came with a temp probe that goes under the radiator hose to adjust when the fan cuts on. I had to weld some bolts onto that metal sheet that goes on top of the radiator to attach the fan and also attached a metal bar going accross the bottom fan attachers to keep the fan from moving. I just hooked the positive to the bat which works, but will keep the fan on after the key is turned off so I have to pop the hood and cut the fan off myself. But it all works great.
Air_Adam 05-16-2007, 08:35:07 PM Why not a dual fan setup? They work so much better, and they leave more room right where it counts - in the middle. A setup from an LT1 or LS1 4th gen would work great. Would probablt end up being cheaper for the fan setup as well.
Just need to find a wiring diagram for a 3rdgen 4bbl car to wire it up to a temperature switch. Painless makes the switches in a bunch of different temperature ranges.

I think i need to do some more looking. I like that Zirgo Fan and it's price, but I'll look at 4th gen fans first before deciding.
pete0331 05-16-2007, 08:40:38 PM Ok I have a question.
What has provides better cooling: Dual fans on the engine side of the radiator? OR two fans in a "push-pull" type setup. With a fan on each side of the radiator?
rindoze 05-16-2007, 10:09:32 PM I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that pulling is about 10% more effective than pushing. So dual on the engine side would be better. I think maybe the push pull is to gain clearance or something

what about duals on BOTH sides!!:p now theres an idea, nbl.

Think that would be over kill. I didn't think engines run that good when they are 40deg as compared to a nice 160-170deg...
al5570 05-17-2007, 08:59:52 AM sorry, i thought my sarcasm would come out with the smiley sticking out his tongue, but he failed me.

I know it was sarcasm, I don't know what I was thinking when I posted that. It was early this morning, i wasn't fully awake...

lol, dont worry, it happens to the best of us.
cam70dude 05-17-2007, 03:08:25 PM Ford Winstar vans come with a dual fan set up. They are only like $40 at Pick-A-Part. Hook one fan up to a thermostat and the other you could hook up to a switch to come on at your choosing or hook both up to thermostat but to come on at different temps.
BonzoHansen 05-17-2007, 08:50:05 PM Ok I have a question.

Two pullers. A front/back setup might actually hinder airflow.
4th gen fans, 3rd gen dual fans work great, fit almost perfect. The ford fans are favorites around the web too.
Best ways to wire dual fans (IMO) - replace ecm leads with 2 different temp switches:

Another way:

Or use a DCC or Spal controller
Air_Adam 05-17-2007, 09:40:48 PM Pushers don't work as well as puller fans. Any fan mounted on the 'engine side' of the rad is a puller (pulls through the rad).
If pushers worked better, GM would definitely have used them on the 4thgens - they are rediculously tight. My LT1 car is so much tighter than my 3rdgen its just silly.
Took me 6 hours to do plugs and wires on the LT1 - and I consider myself a pretty competent mechanic!!
Takes me only about 45 mins for the same on the 3rdgen.
80'427 05-18-2007, 10:18:27 AM On my big block I use a 03 impala dual fan (free). I built my own fan relay/thermostat setup. I just use a 30amp relay and I run a switched ground through a 90? dodge caravan temp switch (on a 180 off a 170) and the other side through a toggle for cooling in the lanes. Has yet to run over 180.
