camertom 08-03-2005, 09:58:00 PM Now there's somethin' you don't see every day. Way cool.
muscl car 08-04-2005, 02:01:00 AM there's a guy at a local car show that is selling his SY-1 for $900. i might trade him my tunnel ram and some other parts for it.

Skaal-tel 79 08-04-2005, 03:16:00 PM Call me a retard til you're blue in the face.. but what is an SY1 intake? race oriented I assume?
f-body 08-05-2005, 01:50:00 AM The SY1 intake is a single 4 barrel cross ram instead of the dual 4 barrel like the original crossram intake offered on the firs gen Z28. It was build by Edelbrock with the help of Smokey Yunick.
Kamikaze 08-05-2005, 10:36:00 AM Hey f-body!
Was curious about what you have in the engine?
Those SY-1's needed alot of re-working in the manifold with "dams" and "flow guides" epoxied in place to prevent fuel from puddling and dropping out of the airstream.
Cam selection is critical for these as that maifold is really sensitive to overlap and acts so different than a tunnel ram intake would.
Carb selection is something else too! You'll need a lot of accelerator shot for this! the manifold is like a bathub and doesn't have a strong vaccum signal at idle.
I have a couple of these manifolds and built a few motors with them. The "WOW" factor is hard to beat but they can be a royal pain to drive on the street if not set-up right.
A few years ago, I met Smokey at a PRI trade Show before he passed away and was able to talk to him about this manifold. He was animated and fun to listen to but a little annoyed when he remembered the "problems" he had with it. The manifold was great for racing especially circle tracks and road courses where engine speeds would be 3000 rpm & up but it is very sensitive to cam selection and carburation. Smokey's problem was when he had Edelbrock cast the manifold, many people bought them and tried to use in on the street and couldn't get it to work!
I talked with Vic Edelbrock Jr. about this and he grimmaced at the mention of this manifold. He reply to me was the same I read in the new hardbound book aboutthe Edelbrock company & family. They have a page discussing this manifold. Basically, Edelbrock didn't want to cast these but they did. After selling abunch, they got calls from people complaining that it didn't work. After a few calls to Smokey, they agreed to have Smokey's phone number in the instructions so people could find out what was needed to make it run right!
As I stated, I have run a couple of these and have had a lot of "fun" tuning them to work. Once you get them set-up right, they run like crazy! I've had a few that come on strong from 2500 up and keep going past 7500!
Hope you get the satisfaction of a strong running animal!
Would love to know what cam you're running with the automatic!
camrs73 08-05-2005, 01:22:00 PM now thats a lot of interesting info right there http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
pdq67 08-07-2005, 03:11:00 PM Try this Edelbrock intake historical table on a MOPAR site, believe it or not!

I figure the old TM-1 single plane is way better then the SY-1 for most hi-po street motors but it doesn't have the WOW factor it has!!
AND I bet the "Tork-Link" intake manifold from Hi-Tech is a dandy EXCEPT it is sooo tall!!

Kamikaze 08-08-2005, 02:31:00 PM pdq67,
Great links!
You're right about the TM1 being better on the street but, inless you're stuck with it or are trying to build a "Period Correct" vehicle, you would have better results with the modern RPM Air Gap or even a Victor Jr!
Still, like f-body, I love the looks of them and have built several combinations that ran pretty good!
pdq67 08-08-2005, 09:02:00 PM He, He!
I like the old, E-brock, side-by-side, high-rise 2-four setups!!
(2) 500cfm AFB's make a dandy streetrod intake system, imho!!
Waaaay old-school!!!!

f-body 08-12-2005, 07:05:00 PM Its a .060 over 350 cast pistons, 10/10 crank and rods stock, 4 bolt block. 882 casting heads with 2.02/1.60 valves ported alot by me, fresh valve job and new valves, 280 Comp with .480 lift 230 duration on 110 lobe center. I have new valve springs since the old ones were really weak. Shimmed them to specs so I should see 6500 no problem, maybe more but the rev limiter will be set to 7000.
I hope to get it running this weekend and maybe get new bearings in the 3.73 posi. Lots of little stuff to finish.
I might still go to an Edlebrock rpm airgap or a victor. 2500rpm to 6000,6500 was where the engine ike the wiend 7546 sigle plane. I never had a stall converter until now and the TCI 3500 model should be ok.

My freind just picked one up for free from his boss. He will probrably let it go cheap? HOW CHEAP???
My local car club will be going to redline raceway 1/8 mile track next month for grudge night so it will be time for me to put up or shut up.
Keep all of you posted on my updates.
