View Full Version : oil gauge question
al5570 05-09-2007, 10:45:01 PM well while doing the bb swap i noticed that the line from my oil gauge to the block is too short to reach to the location on the big block. it is an autometer sport comp oil gauge that uses copper(?) line. i am going to go to a local speed shop to buy some braided line and new fittings. the fitting on the big block needs to be a 3/8 fitting. im going to be using braided line. my question is...........what fittings am i going to need for the gauge side and also for the block side? and what size braided line should i use? thanks guys, i just dont want to seem like an idiot when i go to the shop(its ok if i seem like an idiot here! )
theflash 05-09-2007, 11:37:34 PM I used -3AN braided line and the fitting was a 1/8 90° into the block. I used the farthest forward oil passage right behind the power steering pump. I was told the farthest point from the oil pump would be the lowest psi, so that's why I used that point.
al5570 05-10-2007, 10:10:18 AM thanks flash, anyone else have how they did this on their big block??
theflash 05-10-2007, 03:47:56 PM I'm pretty sure this is the line kit I bought. I had to buy the fitting for the block separate.

al5570 05-10-2007, 05:42:48 PM yea, i just went down to a local speed shop and they actually had an autometer 4AN kit and i bought that 90 degree fitting seperately. thanks for the help, hopefully i can it in before the new motor goes in.
79rallysport 05-11-2007, 01:35:19 PM You're probably going to need to thread that 90* elbow in the block before you put the intake manifold on. I don't think there will be enough clearance to thread it in with the manifold on.

on the big block it doesnt go behind the intake and distributor like the small block. from what i was told you put it in an oil passage, and thats lower on the motor.

That is correct
79rallysport 05-11-2007, 06:19:02 PM Forgot it was for a BB.
al5570 05-12-2007, 01:08:50 PM Flash.......could you possibly post a picture up of where you put that 90 degree bend, because i was looking at the block today and im not sure where there is a place for it, i see places for water, but not sure about the oil. thanks

Ask and you shall receive. Of course my ADD got the best of me and I forgot to take top side pics. The braided line runs up behind the PS pump and across the intake along the valve cover.

Yes, same type plug.
al5570 05-16-2007, 06:18:40 PM ok great, i thought that was to a water passage, but if thats oil, perfect, thanks for all the help.
