View Full Version : 396 value?
Jim Mac 08-04-2005, 11:24:00 PM I just put a 396 short block in the local paper, I didn't put a price, whats a good starting price if I get a call? block is 60 over bores look really good, had a rod knock in number 8 rod has since been resized, sps rod bolts. new 10-10 crank kit,TRW L2242 pistons 10.58 to 1 comp. no cam chrome pan and timing cover, balancer included, I do have 292 open chamber O port heads used whats reasonable with or with out heads. thanks Jim
rscamaro73 08-04-2005, 11:25:00 PM Ehh....$400 to $600...depends on the market, since the crank is in good shape. That's with heads included....
badazz81z28 08-05-2005, 01:12:00 AM a complete (with heads)BBC core around here will go for around $600-$800 if this is just a short block a would say no more than $400.
Does the block need an over bore past .060? that kinda drives down the price. will it sonic check could to go .100?
Jim Mac 08-05-2005, 01:14:00 AM Thanks, it seems every 396 for sale is rare etc. but when I try to get rid of one I usually hear its only a 396, Jim
Jim Mac 08-05-2005, 01:21:00 AM badazz, I think it just needs rings, I thought about putting it back together with the rings that was on the pistons, crank has never been installed, depending on if anyone calls I can either toss the heads in and I have a old torker 11 intake to make someone a package deal, I got a lead on a 70 SS el camino body so I need to sell a bunch of my junk to go and buy the next great project, Ha! Jim
1981coupe400ci 08-05-2005, 02:33:00 AM i WANT a 396.. but all i can find is 454's and when i do find a 396.. they want way to much...
Jim Mac 08-05-2005, 11:23:00 PM I even tried trading it for a 454 but had no luck Jim
71camaroL88 08-06-2005, 11:13:00 AM 400-800 bucks sounds reasonable.

badazz81z28 08-06-2005, 02:07:00 PM I guess it all depend on the area you live in. I agree if you can get a grand hell get a grand! Around here a 454 is a hot ticket but 396 is uhh a 396. 400 will catch a big buck here too. Just say $800 or best offer who knows they might take it or offer $750? anyways good luck I hope you get the price you have set in mind
Jim Mac 08-06-2005, 07:40:00 PM badazz are you talking about a 400 small block? a friend wants one of those and I have a "509" block in my elcamino, he happens to have a CE 350 horse 396 torn down, and talking of looking for a small block 400 for his car. Jim
badazz81z28 08-06-2005, 09:06:00 PM Yea the 400 Small block. I have seen a "509" block sell for $800 on ebay. Bought mine here in New Mexico for $400 and thats after I talked him down lol
Jim Mac 08-06-2005, 11:52:00 PM was that for the whole motor? or just a block? Jim
72RS408BB 08-07-2005, 01:21:00 AM Number one most important thing is to know what era the block is from. Could be a 65 block....worth more?
Jim Mac 08-07-2005, 10:54:00 AM 72 RS the block is stamped JA should be a 325 HP 4 speed from a 69 chevelle/ el camino Jim

Jim Mac 08-07-2005, 11:30:00 PM I've got one of those in my camaro and my el camino,I definately need to think about getting rid of those things, the camaro is a weekend driver, and the el camino, is back yard art, unfortunately folks in tucson doesn't seem to pay much for stuff. Jim
Jim Mac 08-08-2005, 11:20:00 PM got a call tonight, guy seems real interested, I told him 500 for the short block and he said he'll be here with cash tommorrow. I even told him he can have a 454 4 bolt thats missing the mains for 50 bucks and he said he'll probably take it too. Jim
