So,.....
Short story is I've been out of this for about 12 years.

Just bought me a car, now I'm building a motor. Which heads should I use? Just wanting a good thumper motor. The ol' car will be driven once a week maybe. I love to hear that rumble!!!!!!

I'm going with a 350 block, probally go .30 over, aluminum intake, Bla, bla.... I just want to build a thumpin' hotrod Camaro. Help me out. Planning on droping parts at the machine shop in the AM.

I have these 3986336 heads (76 cc)

or

I have a set of 305 heads 14022601 52cc.

Thanks

look into some dart iron eagles... or maybe maybe some sportsmans ,or S/R torquers

BUT if i had to choose between the 336 or the 601's i'd go 601's and open them up for 1.94/1.50 valves, and do alittle hand porting...

they seem to be a decent head with alittle bit of work

Thanks.

I'm pretty much stuck with what I have to choose from right now. I'm not building a race car, just a driver with a good thump in it. Any more advice is appreciated and welcome.

step up to Canfields and leave the wannabes in the dust.
TrickFlows23' are good too
If Iron heads are wanted, Vortecs woop all the others.

if ya gotta use what ya got.. use the 601's(but only if they have the 1.84/1.50 vavles stock)

If i had to use one of those sets definately the 601's but I dont think i'd waste money on larger valves just pocket port gasket match intake and port the exhausts valve job and run'em for a while.

The 601's would give you a little more compression but the small chambers will need to be unshrouded since they are made for a smaller bore. 601's are lightweight castings so they might be a problem if they need to be milled to "square-up".

If you go this route, you might as well have larger 1.94 /1.50 valves put in , do some bowl clean-up and minor porting but after all this work and labor, you'll end-up spending as much with a machine shop as you would to buy a set of Vortecs or RHS heads ready-to-go out of the box and they'll probably out-perform the 601's.

Another option for you. Summit Racing has recently offered some rebuilt heads at decent prices.

Find out what some budget Aluminum heads cost then go talk to a machine shop. I was going to have my stock heads reworked and then found out the cost. For some more $ I was able to get into a nice set of aluminum heads. Prices add up quick at least where I live.

Normally for a budget boost in performance, I'd use the 305 heads. But since you are rebuilding from scratch, I'd use the 336 heads. They are a slightly smaller runner version of the 336X heads used on some 9.0 to 1 compression Z/28 engines, and you can always mill them to pick up another half a point.

But, aftermarket is best unless you don't have cash or just prefer to use factory parts. Since you say you're stuck with them, I'd use em!

for under $800 you can pick up some procomp aluminum heads.. i just got a set... as far as looks... they look nice.. the outside isnt smoothed out like some of the higher price ones.. but as far as everything else... they look nice...
