I am taking a 454 from a 1989 suburban with an automatic and putting in my 1971 Camaro with a manual. I understand that I need to get an externally balanced flywheel, but do I also need to change the damper too or just put the flywheel on and go? Thanks, Kevin

454 BB flywheel here!!

Not a 400 SB one!!

OR buy a 454 crank flange balance plate for around $15 to $20... And then use a stock neutral balanced 350 flywheel.

Can you use just any ext balanced flywheel, or does it have to be balanced with the rotating assembly?

A 400 SB need's a 400 SB flywheel and a 454 BB need's a 454 BB flywheel.

But you can buy cheap crank flange balance plates for both a 400 and a 454 so that you can use a neutral balance flywheel IF you want to save some money.

And both the damper and flywheel/flex plate are NOT balanced to a specific rotating assembly so that they can be used on other engines!!
