View Full Version : aftermarket electric fan
bigbluthng 07-19-2005, 04:07:00 PM i decided i need a new fan. overheating in traffic or even stop and go sucks. what should i look for in an aftermarket fan. i want something that looks clean and preferably has it's own shroud. eventually i will change out the hd radiator for a griffin. any recommendations?
73454 07-19-2005, 04:35:00 PM LT1/LS1 fans do the job nicely, as does the Lincoln Mark VIII fan setup.
Old School 07-19-2005, 11:28:00 PM I second the LT1/LS1 fans. Awesome fans!!!!

Charlie Brengun 07-21-2005, 02:05:00 PM i have the fans from a '99 malibu (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v717/CharlieCamaro/vicky%20camaro/DSCF10011.jpg) in mine, fits nicely and cools nicely too.. also they're cheaper than most lt1/ls1 fan setup i've seen available on ebay.

cool! more choices! I haven't seen LS1 fans for cheaper than $110.
engine 07-22-2005, 11:46:00 PM anyone have any experience with a Ford Focus fan?

BigBlue72 07-23-2005, 07:07:00 PM I love my LS1 fans, they fit my radiator perfectly. I even used the original rad cover to hold them in place took all of 5 minutes to install and not much longer to wire in. I have a 3 core radiator and am able to run them in series and it cools it well even on 102 degree days like today.

jarcat146352 07-23-2005, 09:35:00 PM check your fan shroud, it does more than you think. I use dual hayden fans with a stock 4 core rad. hayden 10,000 rpm flex fan, flowcooler water pump/high flow thermostat...The whole setup is cheaper than you think. Check your system, don't just throw money at it. Cheapest thing first.

Patrick73RS 07-23-2005, 09:41:00 PM Bigblue72 may I ask how exactly you wired your fans up? Sorry about the hijack http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
theflash 07-23-2005, 10:53:00 PM Get one of these and a shroud, it'd cheaper and cools better than 98% of the electric fans out there.

engine 07-24-2005, 01:03:00 AM but those flex fans cause too much drag IMO. I have a stock type clutch fan w/ HD clutch, stock shroud, and stock 7.75" crank, 6.25" wp pullies, gives me a 1.23:1 waterpump overdrive, and works great. I'll idle on a hot day at about 180-185 no problem. I'm thiking of going ith LS1 fans to free up some hp, especially when I get my A/C all hooked up (whenever that'll be...)

I used a derale relay temp sensor from Summit. I hooked the power wire out of the relay to the power wire of fan #1 then I hooked what would be the ground wire of fan #1 to the power wire of fan #2 then grounded the Ground wire of fan #2. this causes a nice quiet operation not a huge draw on the elec system and is still cooling fine in 102* heat. I Guess this is the way they are hooked up in the Camaros stock, but with a second relay to switch them to parallel if them temp continues to rise.
If you want any more detail, shoot me an email and I'll shoot you the info.

gmachinz 07-24-2005, 10:57:00 AM One thing to remember is what the actual cfm rating of a fan is. This relates to how well it moves air through the radiator which determeines how well it sheds the coolant of heat. At the top of the electric fan choices is the Mark VIII with 5000 cfm. Flex fans only move as fast as the water pump and aside from blade pitch-there is nothing really impressive about them. A well designed electric fan is the best route. A relay system is one option for activation but a progressive controller is a better solution. -Jabin

BIGBADBOWTIE 07-26-2005, 10:38:00 AM Im using a single fan from a 3.8 olds. It looks and cools GREAT. It also fits inside the stock fan shroud.
Car Craft did a dyno test last year with and without a flex fan.....dyno showed 18 to 25 HP(if I remember correct) gain with no flex fan in place.
Sounds good to me.

engine 07-28-2005, 09:28:00 PM I might splurge one day and get this guy. It's a Flex a Lite, pulls 4600 cfm at 28 amps. It's pricey, but it's awesome...

gmachinz 07-29-2005, 09:50:00 AM I dunno-the Mark VIII is rated at 5000cfm @ 40 amps but I get them for $280 with a progressive controller. That drops the amperage use down quite a bit (mine runs at about 26-28 amps). How much is that fan you're talking about? It looks like the Black Magic fan they advertise. Typically, the motors are not very durable in any aftermarket fan assembly I've seen. Siemens/VDO is the industry leader in fan motors and they make a majority of the automakers motors-including the Mark VIII fan. -Jabin

this fan is $369 in Summit. It has the progressive fan controller on it already (the box with black & red wired) starts the fans at 60% and increases speed as needed. Also had an AC relay and a bypass switch (I think) It is the 295 dual 13.5" puller. I've researched, and it seems these fans pull the least amount of amperage out of all that I've looked at.
When you say "I get them for $280", do you mean you sell them that way, buy them or what?

You might have to check that you will not have any clearence issues with the fill cap being on the top like that. I remember reading a post from someone here where they could not get th ehood to close properly. Cap was also on top. I am not saying it will not work, but be sure to double check you measurements.

Cadillaccory 07-31-2005, 12:04:00 PM That radiator that I posted earlier, I personally am going to purchase one for my BBC as soon as I get some free cash. Fans, radiator, shroud all in one package? Has anyone seen anything better? I am going to contact the propietor of the eBay Store and see if he'll give me a deal in purchasing two of them, as my buddy with a 69 firebird wants this radiator for his 326, so if I can combine shipping I figure I should be able to get them for 300 each plus shipping.

I've been looking at this also. Will it fit a stock copper/brass, 26 inch core rad? It seems to be a bit wide.

well, the specs say you need a 27.5" mounting surface. I have a 27x19 corvette rad in my car, and it looks like it will fit fine. In the Flex a lite application chart, it shows that it will fit a FireBird, but desn't mention a camaro...wierd.
But you can probably let it overlap the ends of the rad a bit, probably won't hurt anything. You'll know for sure that you have the complete radiator surface covered... http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

bigbluthng 08-01-2005, 06:01:00 PM firebird rads are wider. i was given a 4 core unit from a bird and it was too wide for the camaro
engine 08-01-2005, 06:35:00 PM my rad is, like I said before, a '79 vette 4-row, and I just measured the core being exactly 27.5", from tank to tank. I think it'll fit mine. the rad fit into my car with no fuss.
gmachinz 08-01-2005, 07:38:00 PM Sorry for the confusion-I sell the rad./controller pkg. for $280. This controller has quite a few extra provisions for a wide variety of cooling issues. If anyone wants a detailed instruction sheet, emial me and I'll send you one-it explains how it hooks up-very easy and durable. -Jabin

Chevynut67 08-02-2005, 06:45:00 AM Thanks for your input guys. I thought it was weird too that the Camaro was not included in their list. Now I know why. I'll see about those LS1 fans for mine, then.
engine 08-02-2005, 11:13:00 PM I sent Flex a lite an email regarding that fan, and I got a response from one of the tech guys to call him. I did, and he was concerned about the radiator core size. I told him the dimensions and he said it will fit perfectly. He assured me that this fan will cool my small block no problemo.
I mentioned the LS1 fans to him, and he brought something up that intrigued me. He said he got a call from someone who had the LS1 fans, and was inquiring about the speed controller they offer. He said that the customer noted that the actual fan housing is hot with 12v while operating. He said he then checked himself and found the same thing. Anyone else see that?
