I HAVE RESONTLY ADDED another 79 camaro to my fleet of cars. So now I have the racecar, the 79 camaro, and 85 vette, and my one-ton truck and my factor demo camry. The car is of course old and the motor is very tired. Not that it ever was anything to write home about. It was born with 130 horsepower and at this point in its life only has 100 horsepower at best.

I was going to use all my old racecar parts in it. And in fact most of those parts are already in the car. Turbo 350 trans from tci with a 3000 converter in it. Which by the way gave the car some life. I put the 6al box in a new msd distributor and a victor junior intake holly double pumper 750 and 410 gears (not in yet) as well as cal trac bars. Those bars are not in yet, I got the old slapper bars in there now. I’m having my racecar back halfed so I’ll get the cal-trac bars in later.

Anyway, I have a 355 that I ran 12 sec with in a 3350 lb camaro. That motor is all apart and I’m putting it back together…. Here’s the problem. Last winter a water pipe broke in my garage. It ruined my tag weather computer, but I s over that. Now that I’m putting the motor back together I discovered that my roller hyd cam is rusted as well as my roller lifters and timing chain. Everything else is ok. Now my motor is a retro motor (not born for roller cam) so to get new lifters will cost 419 beans OUCH>>>>.

So if you were me ( I have another roller cam makes power from 2000-5500) would you just bit the bullet and get the new roller lifters, or do I surrender and just go with a hyd reg flat tappet, or solid flat tapet……

The car is a street car though I’m not sure I like the idea of the 4.10 gears but I own those and 3.73 which is better on the rpms but I would have to buy that one. I already have 4.56 and 4.88…….i want my daughter to drive the car at the strip since she’s a little afraid of my 10 sec car. Though she says she can handle it. i would like a recommendation on which cam to put in there…..

Thanks

Its kinda wierd that we have real similar cars......I have a 79Z28, 94 Vette,04 1 ton F350 & a 97 Lexus ES300! I'd go as far as to say we have similar taste.....in cars anyway.

Sorry man, not a racer, but looking at it from a cost effective point of view, I'd probably get the new lifters for $419.

Nah! Just clean the rust off of them and run them. Now you've got "lubrication pockets" that'll help by holding oil!

(I don't know how serious I am about that. In theory it sounds good, but in practice it may be a bad idea.)

From what I've understood, the biggest problems with solid rollers is lack of lubrication at low engine speeds. That being said, since this is to be a street driver, if the cam you have is a solid roller, I would shy away from it and just give her an aggressive hyd flat tappet like the Voodoo line. If the cam is a hyd. roller, change the lifters and let her race!

BTW, my "too soon" to be 16yr old daughter is dying to be able to make passes in my car as well. It's fun to have the whole family involved!

hey thanks for the responces on my cam wowes...........

i've deceided to just go with the roller cam that i already own. the lifters will be expensive (400) but i know i'll be alot happier with the car. i already have been behind the wheel of this combionation. the only difference this time is that the car will be heaverier. it was a 12 .3 car at 3300 so now intherory it will be high 12's and or low 13ths. but that is cool. with the 410 gears in it i know i will surly be able to shatch the pavement on the street. it should be fun..
