View Full Version : Coolant leak
cattmann1 07-16-2005, 05:46:00 PM Has anyone ever had a coolant leak somewhere around the rear of the engine that ends up dripping under the torque cover. I even jacked the car up and crawled under with a light and cant see anything dripping but yet it will be on the garage floor the next day .Not alot but a spot about 2' in dia.I am thinking it might be my intake but can't see any leaks hot.

camarochevy1970 07-16-2005, 06:10:00 PM What about a rear freeze plug?
tom3 07-16-2005, 08:20:00 PM My 88 was leaking around the rear bottom of the head, really hard to spot and it actually leaked off the conv. cover.
cattmann1 07-27-2005, 07:02:00 PM Camaro Chevy your probably right. I removed the cover from the flex plate tonight and let the car run up on stands for a while. I checked the back of the engine very closely and found no leak from the heads or intake. Where it is dripping from is the back of the oil pan ,right where the lip covers the rear seal.Any one ever have a frost plug drip back in this area?
dgwar 07-28-2005, 12:21:00 AM Has this engine got an aluminum intake gasket?
I suspect an intake leak at the rear port.

Twisted_Metal 07-28-2005, 11:39:00 AM Wipe as much of the area as clean as you can, spray it with foot powder and then restart the car. The powder will show exactly where it is leaking.

I think there is a plug right near where the cam would be in the back of the block. It is possible it is dripping there, running down the block, and you are seeing it when it gets to the oil pan area.
The only way to know for sure might be to get a flash light, and see if you can see in there when it starts to do it.
cattmann1 07-28-2005, 03:13:00 PM Just finished pulling the tranny. No leaks in the back of the block. While I was under the car noticed a small bit of coolant on the right hand side of the oil pan gasket. It was on the back right corner. This tells me the leak must be originating some where on the right hand side and following the oil pan gasket.I checked all along the block and can't feel or see a thing.I think I may get a pressure tester and try and see if I can detect it this way.I had the car running twice with out the tranny installed and brought it up to temp and there is nothing dripping AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

camarochevy1970 07-28-2005, 03:20:00 PM That sounds more like the very corner of the head gasket is leaking.
Skaal-tel 79 07-28-2005, 03:59:00 PM Is it possible that it leaks as it cools down? Different composition metals on any engine parts? Aluminum intake manifold shrinking faster than iron block or vice versa? any coolant in the oil?
cattmann1 07-28-2005, 11:21:00 PM No coolant in the oil..It has only leaked about a cup full in 2 weeks but I cant stand leaks. It seems to leak on the cool down side.It sat all day and there is no drip .I am removing the starter tomorrow so I can take a closer look along the right side.If I can't find it I might pull the right head and intake off, that is after I get the dam tranny back in.Maybe I should have left it but who knows it might just be the start of something bad.

zeek 07-29-2005, 02:02:00 AM oddly enuff i am having the same problem with my car only i havnt bothered to look at it. i noticed antifreeze on my cat converter so im trying to figure out where its coming from but havnt actualy bothered to look yet.
cattmann1 07-29-2005, 04:22:00 PM Well after 2 days of searching I finally found my leak. I removed the starter and pressurized the cooling system. After along time and many hand rubs all over the right hand side of the engine I found coolant seeping out of a crack or pin holes in the block. It is in line with #6 spark plug and about 1 inch up from the oil pan.It is directly under the 010 numbers on the block. Is there any way to seal this leak with block sealant or is this just a temporary fix. When the engine is warm there is no leak and when it cools off it leaks such a minute amount it was hard to find.Actually there are 3 black lines where it was leaking running down to the oil pan gasket.Looks like the paint was eaten off.Maybe it has been there since the rebuild as I only go for the odd cruise and drag the odd weekend.I have never added coolant and the system is full.Any block repair specialists out there.

John Wright 07-29-2005, 04:49:00 PM Bars Leak with waterpump conditioner in it, might stop the seepage.

Ok, now go change all your passwords :)
Rick WI 07-29-2005, 04:53:00 PM GM makes coolant tabs that come in a pack of 5 or 6. This is what they use on aluminum motors. It works awesome and should take care of your problem.
When you get the tabs crush them all in a bowl to a reasonable powder. Then pour the powder in the radiator and fill with mix to top.
