View Full Version : Anyone stroke a 350 to a 408 yet?
64Boxcar 04-29-2007, 11:37:01 PM Not that im looking to do it or anything with a brand new scat 383 kit but Im just woundering. Seem's like alot of stroke for a 350 block with people already woried alot of geting into the water jackets with clearence isue's of a 3.75 stroke what about cam clearence? But im just wanting to know what kinda numbers they put up compared to other simular cubic inched SBC say a 406. Will the 4in bore not perform as well as the 4 1/8 at this level.
I know one thing the kit's are in$ane.

spinmaster 04-30-2007, 09:03:59 PM I have never seen a kit like this.
pdq67 04-30-2007, 09:22:35 PM A 408" SB is just a .030" overbore 350 stroked to 4.00".

Crate engines, or regular 400 sbc? I heard tha biggest ya could git outta 400sb is 434.
Rick WI 04-30-2007, 11:58:33 PM 350 block and 4" stroke don't work well together, you answered why. That's why it's not done.
Yes, the bigger bores do make a difference on the dyno and on the track/street. 8-20 HP is a range of numbers we have seen on the dyno with various small block configurations.
A 434 is the absolute max for a stock 400 and I'd never do it with a stock block these days. Aftermarket blocks can go 454 with little work.

:p

What in the eff is a raped ape?
Marv D 05-01-2007, 10:37:44 AM The problem with this big stroke in the 350 is the lack of 'crankshaft overlap', and what happens is this...

Geeeeze Geezer, ther eare easier ways to remove the rods without having to do that (LMAO). That looks like an oiling problem to me with the bearings still welded to the crank.
Matt, very few 4" stroke / 4" bore block motors out there, and even fewer that survive very long. Your going to have to start with filling the block because you are goint to hit water as you clearance the crankcase for the big arm. Second, when your going to that much trouble and expense to make this work, you are dumping too much $'s into a less than reliable casting. Aftermarket block is the only way to go. And if your going aftermarket to accomodate the 4" stroke,, your giving up a TON of HP by not stepping up to the plate with a 4.155"+ bore.
For the most part,,, 3.875" stroke (396 cu in) is as much as I've seen be semi reasonable and reliable in (street or race) 4" stock blocks. If you have the $'s to get exotic, Dart has a raised deck, raised cam tunnel sbc casting that makes a 460" sbc a real possibility. But then you run into the headache and expense of finding a head to feed this monster.
retorq 05-01-2007, 11:12:37 AM I always heard it as 'raped date' . . which is far less politically correct . . :)

I dont know. I dont see what the problem is there.
craigblock 05-01-2007, 07:06:49 PM Seems like an unreliable way of making more horsepower, at least with a stock block.

Wow, you are young ;)
Just try to get a mental picture
Levi 05-01-2007, 07:46:33 PM I imagine ace standing over the ape still puffin his ciggerete.
64Boxcar 05-01-2007, 08:57:00 PM Dang looks like this post took off after all. Well I personaly never considerd it and I saw the kits before I orderd mine. It just sound like a bad idea to me to start with. Like Marv said the first thing I would do with 2k is buy a after market block and it damn sure wouldnt be a 4 inch bore. I just wanted to educate myself a bit before I compleatly turned my nose up at the 350/408 kit. And posting and geting people's first hand exp is always a good start.:)

pdq67 05-01-2007, 10:46:10 PM You all need to think about back before the 327 came out and the 283 was King, they made what was known as "4x4's"..
An 1/8th over 283 w/ a highly worked over 352 Packard/Stude crank that ended up 4"!!
Came out w/ a 402.1" SB motor!!
And like the ever LOVELY, Miss Dolly say's, "It's like stuffing 5 pound a sugar in a 3 pound sack!!"" He, He!!
