OK, getting down to stupid details and I hit a good one. Here is where I am at:

*3rd gen Serp Setup
*standard water neck

I tried both upper hoses listed for this car (dayco #s 70635 and 70724) and both hit the alternator. What upper hose and water neck did you use? Did you even have this problem?

This is basically what mine looks like: (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/performance_parts/store/catalog/Product.jhtmlPRODID=2809&CATID=957.html)

What neck is that?

Jake did one in a nova - what neck is that?

SpeedAddict did one - how?

For searchers, I found the 80-81 V8 Camaro line (the metric ends) works perfect with the 3rd gen steering pump.

I went to the parts store and looked in their book. They have an illustrated book that shows the necks and their applications. Anything Chevy or GM will work usually. Find one that looks about right.

I used a hose from a 1990 Chevy Fullsize truck, V8.

I think before I went tuned port I used the neck and hose from a 92 Camaro TBI.

D'oh! 3rd gen hose - I'll try that tomorrow. Housing is same listing as 77 Camaro.

That's exactly what I did and it all fits perfectly.

There are two styles of serpentine brackets. One from a truck or V6 which locates everything higher on the block and one from a car with a V8 which locates everything lower. I used the one from a car and my stock hoses and goose neck fit perfect. My stock upper hose sits perfect on top of the little pedestal that came with the setup and holds the hose away from the belt and alternator

scott, let me know what ends up working for you. I have a serp setup I pan on running in my 79 and I'd like to avoid any problems. kinda like learning from your mistakes, hehe.

Hey scott.. I used a 90* swivel "summit" water neck.. And I used a flex style radiator hose.. I routed the hose kinda like an "S"..It comes straight off the radiator towards the Alt, turns on top of (and rests on) the Alternator, goes towards the P/S into the water neck.. I will snap a pic tomorrow if I remember.. Previously, I had a 45* water neck, and had the hose come off the radiator making a sharp left to the p/s, at the center of the rad, it then turned right towards the water neck.. I didnt like it crossing right over the belt by the tensioner, and the 45* neck caused clearance issue with the air cleaner..

the way it is now, it is out of the way of the belt, and it clears the hood just fine..

HD, I do have the V8 f-body setup. I have a bracket like that, but the one I have actually mounts under the alternator belt (TPI car?), and I can't effectively mount it up there. I might be able to cut it & weld a new mount part on it. Thanks for the pic.

Funny, the hose that was on my car goes over the alt and is pretty good fit. I have no idea how old it is and I want to change it. It does not match either of the hoses that are listed for the car (I have them both). I think the correct hose will fit with a somewhat taller neck. SA, I saw that same neck, except 45*, on a car today (a 79 no less), and I think it would work for me.

But I am going to try the TBI hose 1st. Details, details.....

If anyone else has $0.02, bring it!

Good to know.

I have the 4.3 setup waiting to go on, have to look into the right hoses and such. Also, is there a belt size difference between the v8 and v6 apps? I dont have the smog pump pully bypass.

Use a '88+ 3rdgen hose... '89-92 5.0 TBI is probably the most 'accurate' hose.

Bonzo, the first pic, is the first one I had.. It worked, but the hose touched the air cleaner.. (14x3).. The second pic, is what I have now and works better imo..
I am still working on a pic for ya.. Cant find my digi-cam.. sorry.. Soon as I find it, I'll snap a pic for ya..

I'm almost positive I tried a 3rd gen hose first, and the inside diamter was too small....could be wrong though..

You are not wrong, the ID of the 3rd gen hose is smaller. I might be able to make it work, but only because the neck on my rad is 'stepped'.

If you could.

I got a neck from summit. Made it better not great, but now I think I can use the hose Jake listed. That is next on the hit parade.

I wish I had some idea what the hose that was on the car actually is!

Bonzo,

Is this for the 77? Does it have a/c? I can look up the GM part number for the '77.

Thanks. I have both the hoses listed for the car (it is an AC/HD cooling car), and a 3rd gen hose too. But the serp setup doesn't like the 77 hoese, and the 3rd gen hose is too small in ID. The hose that was on the car doesn't match, and fits ok. I have no idea what app it is for. :)

Bonzo, I ran in this with my old motor (back in 2000). I used one of those 90 degree swivel ones that were pictured. Like it has been discussed, the 3rd gen didn't work because of the hose size (on engine- too small). I ended up using one of those universal ribbed type ones. I tried the S curve way but can't remember why I didn't like it. I ended up running it around the back side of the alternator and then up front. I didn't have any rubbing issues. The hose sat on top of the valve cover but not a big deal. Here are some pictures of my old setup http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2563592220066817753fKsMaB You could also try one of those one that you can bend and put the different size ends on it. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D390024&N=700+115&autoview=sku I have seen a black one somewhere if you didn't like the chrome look. Mine was on a first gen but maybe it could give you another idea. Hope this helps.
