I am building a 383 for street use and want to kno how this cam will work on the street.I am looking at the comp cams XE 284
lift- .507/.510
duration- 284/296
Rpm range 2300-6500
I want it to have a little thump but still be able to idle in traffic and drive.

So this should be fine to idle in traffic and be driven everyday? Should i go with more cam? Did you like the Xe 284 mwilson?

I thought the XE 284 was a great street cam not Max HP cam but great broad powerband sounded good and ran decent track times in my combo. I havent seen your entire combo but I assume since your going stroker you've already installed decent gears 3.42 or better and you plan on a 2500 to 3200 stall.

Yeah It would be ok in a 383.

I bet it will sound almost like a stock cam. I had a Comp 292 with .510 lift in my 406 and it sounded like a stock cam to me at 900 rpm, it would not thump at all but it made good power but I was used to a cam with more thump in my 350.

Something was obviously wrong with your tuning. Sounds like your timing was too high or you had too much compression. I run a Comp XE274 which is only 230/236 dur @ .050 and EVERY time I pull up somewhere I'm asked "Damn, what cam you running?" It is fairly choppy. The one I built for a buddy this past spring got the XE284. It sounds like a REAL hotrod. He's tickled to death about it.
