View Full Version : i just got a free 305 that has 300hp..
andrew1977 04-18-2007, 02:12:06 PM ok a wile back this kid had my dad build up his 305 TPI motor from his iroc camaro. it has a good set of heads on it and a bunch of other stuff. i guess it needs piston rings so he is just getting a new motor. well my dad is installing this other new motor for cheap, he is installing it for cheap because he is going to give me the old motor. anyway the motor being fuel injected is a problem because it has to have a carburetor so im not sure if i can bolt a performer RPM intake manifold to the heads. the heads are the origonal iroc heads so im not sure what kind of intake manifold. i need to find out by friday because thats when i will be getting the motor. anouther problem is; will my headers still work with this motor? i have hedman headers on my stock 305 from my 77camaro. how many mods am i looking at doing to get this motor to work? is it even worth it? will my turbo 350 bolt up to it? do engine mounts change with irocs TPI? i cant seem to find much info on this stuff.
cmonson 04-18-2007, 02:42:48 PM I believe for the most part everything will bolt up. The problem will be however with the fuel system. But really not that big of a deal.
You will need an in tank fuel pump that puts out a higher pressure.
You will also need the electronics from the engine for the fuel injection system.
I do NOT believe your headers will fit either.
TO be honest, 305s are a dime a dozen. They are a reliable engine, but if you want to make power go to a 350, 383, or 400.
You could probably swap your tired 305 to a 350 with some goodies for pretty cheap though. I see people all of the time selling a good used 350 with goodies for $600. It would drop right in without any mods. Even your accessories swap right on. You can make a 350HP 350CI motor for extremely cheap.
I would pass on the TPI and opt for another pre 86 SBC...
camaronut79 04-18-2007, 02:48:47 PM ok first off get the casting #'s off the heads to see what you have, yes you can put a carb on there but im thinking you will need a vortec style intake, your th350 will bolt right up to it. as for your headers im not a 100% sure they will, some of the later 80's heads were wierd all the bolt holes will line up except for the last bolt, some people got away with putting a thick gasket there and just tighting the one bolt down (I would not do that). personaly I would just build a 350 and be done with it.
look at where the headers bolt up and look at the last hole and see if it looks to be further out
Dirt Reynolds 04-18-2007, 03:48:55 PM Andrew I *highly* doubt that 305 has anywhere near 300 HP. TPI engines are very induction limited and as a result made good torque but not a lot of horsepower. The best the Corvette ever did with TPI and factory aluminum heads was 250 HP and that was a 350 engine.
I'm in agreement with the other posts, I'd definitely pass on the 305 and look for a cheap 350 if you want any decent amount of power. The 305 is fine for a daily driver but 350's make so much better performance engines with modifications its really not worth the trouble and expense to mess around with a 305.
GetMore 04-18-2007, 04:10:33 PM Let's see:
IIRC, they dropped IROC on the later years, only the early years were available as IROC versions. This means that the heads may have the standard intake bolt pattern and angles, so all the typical intakes will bolt up.
The transmission will bolt up, no problem.
The exhaust, except for the possible "missing bolt hole" should match right up.
FreedomPenguin 04-18-2007, 06:23:38 PM hmm 350ci 350 hp Cheap? let me hear lol i got 79 block smogger heads, 600cfm edelbrock carb all stock rest pretty much.. probly 180hp dont laugh its my first car what would i be lookin at in parts to get 200more hp or so?
heres one thread on engine

these boards pretty much shed everything about my engine as compression whats in them etc..
andrew1977 04-18-2007, 06:58:14 PM i actually am building a 350 right now. i just dont have the money to finish it the way id like to. i just need a temp motor right now and this motor sounds like a good option. i do still have the stock 305 in my car but i has a lazy 140 hp. for a temporary motor i want somthing like 300hp, not crazy.

as i said this motor is not at all stock. the kid is an idiot and sunk over 2000 bucks into it. the heads have had work done to them aswell. iv had lots of profesional mechanics tell me its around 300 hp. im not crazy about 305s either, i personally dont want to waste my time on them but i need a temp motor until i get my 350 done.
FreedomPenguin 04-18-2007, 07:04:46 PM i want 350 hp =( xD lol
GetMore 04-18-2007, 07:31:32 PM Most likely the cam is kind of mild and will not rev very high, but the engine should have relatively high compression.
You will probably have good luck with a Performer intake. A Performer RPM may be too big for the combo.
The engine should have very good power off the line, and with the carb'ed intake you may even get some top end, but don't plan on reving it to 6,500 rpm. It'll do it, but it won't make any power up there.
As a free motor it will be a great upgrade for you, and a stepping stone for your next motor.

first off ditch the heads. A great bolt on is a set of vortecs. With a little home brewed port and polish work it is 50HP bolted on. I also had to mod them for extra lift but not a big deal.
I personally had a pretty good set up with a pair of almost stock 882 heads. When I modded the vortecs and bolted them on, I am willing to bet I picked up 50HP
Now install a cam to go with the heads. Your stock cam served the purpose of fuel economy. Install a comp camps 268 or 274 (or anything of your choice and debatable). I would be willing to bet that will add 50HP. Now add an eddy rpm intake, some long tube headers, and duel exhaust with an X or H. Probably 30HP all together...
I would be willing to bet from a stock 79 350CI motor with compression around 9.5:1 with 64cc heads and my above comments you would be close to 350HP.
All together the above mods could probably be done for about $1500 with all new parts.

I hate to burst your bubble but unless he put the entire $2k into the heads alone it's highly unlikely the TPI305 is going to make 1HP per cube. A quality rebuild with soft parts (pistons, bearings, cam kit and freshen the heads gaskets etc) at a near stock level is going to run $1300 minimum with block machine work. That leaves $700 for assembly and port work. And that doesn't include replacing the injectors and custom ecm/prom to support that much HP. I'm not saying it's impossible, but highly unlikely.
FreedomPenguin 04-18-2007, 08:58:39 PM when i find a job here il start saving up like before and later in the future il re ask this question when i have money to burn. thx for info tho

im not sure what he put the money into on the motor. id have to get my dad to pull up the file to find out. when i say $2000 it is a guess, it could be more. i know that his final bill was $7000 but he also did suspension mods, lowerded the car etc. the reason i guess 2000 dollars is because he had to pay labour rates ($70 per hour) and the suspension mods wich i have no clue. so to be safe i said $2000 but it cold be alot more. id have to have my dad pull the file to let me know. i know what you mean though, it will cost alot to rebuild that motor. should i just put the heads on the 305 in my car then? the reason i wanted to build that tpi is because it has somthing like 9.5 compresion and my motor has 8.5 .
cmonson 04-19-2007, 07:44:30 AM If I were you, I wouldn't put another dime into the 305. I would take the 305 that I got for free, sell it, and then put the money towards a 350 or 400.
The other 305 making 9.5 compared to your 8.5:1 is probably b/c the heads have smaller chambers. You could make yours a 9.5:1 motor with the addition of heads more than likely... 1 point on the compression is NOT going to get you that much more power all other things staying the same. Trust me, been there done that...
Trust me, don't put any money into your 305 if you are trying to make a quick car. THe 305 is an excellent engine for a daily driver don't get me wrong, but as far as performance, there are far better...

the heads have the same 58cc or somthin... i know that they are the same cc though.
TooLateVTEC 04-19-2007, 11:46:18 AM If your car is easy to work on,I would just swap the heads and buy a regular intake and carb and throw a distributor in it.
Since your saying its temp. anyway I wouldnt waste the time swapping motors.
The headers will work fine and the TH350 will bolt right up to it.
OR
You could pull the heads, clean them up a little and sell them and make some money back for your 350. People will buy them,b/c I have sold a set on Ebay before.
sniggle_t 04-19-2007, 12:26:39 PM You said that you are building a 350 but don't have the $$ to do it the way you want right now. Also that your car currently has a 305 that is lazy as you put it with around 140 HP.
I undersatnd your are anxious to have your ride be more powerful but....
I sugest you think more about it. Your looking at doing a bunch of work and spending some money to put this other 305 in or to fix up the one in your car. I'd personally sell the 305 you are getting for free and save my pennies to do the 350 the way you want. If you don't stick to a plan you will spend way more money than you need to in order to get to the end result you want.

ya i know what you mean, i just want to be able to drag race it this year and i want at least 300 hp. im thinking about just keeping the motor i have in there and putting the new heads on, a performer cam, performer intake, and a edelbrock 650cfm thunder carb or whatever its called. if i just buid the 350 right now i wont have a back up motor either. im planning on putting 500hp on the 350 so its really pushing the limits. this car is my daily driver.
andrew1977 04-19-2007, 03:05:29 PM does anyone know if performer intake manifold will bolt up to the tpi heads? will i need the vortec style?
cmonson 04-19-2007, 03:08:16 PM I think you need another daily driver...

i will only drive the car in the summer. i wont drive it in the rain, i dont want it to rust more then it already is:screwup:
RacerRick 04-19-2007, 03:15:28 PM What heads are on the 305? If it is a factory L69 roller motor, its pretty easy to get around 275hp out of these engines. They have 601 casting heads that flow pretty good and have 1.84/1.50 valves, and a little over 9:1 compression. They were rated at something like 215hp from the factory.
The heads really wake up with some porting work, and a hotter cam, with a good intake and exhaust and you are pretty much at 275hp.
If its going to be a cheap motor to play with, just hone it, throw some rings in it and drive it while you build the 350.
