View Full Version : Napa Motor Mounts
EricsZ28 04-18-2007, 12:47:52 PM So I just left Napa & I am a little confused. They showed 2 different motor mounts - standard & high performance. They couldn't figure out the difference between the two.
From what I could tell there were 2 key differences:
1. The standard mounts had 4 mounting holes and the hi-perf had 3 holes. IIRC, my '80 Z only had 3 bolts installed, but I couldn't 4 holes...
2. The standard mounts put the mounting bolt 1/4" (guessing) closer to the frame. That alone made me pick the standard mounts - I need hood clearance & don't want to mess up my pinion angle.
So are the standard ones the "right" ones? This is for my modest 383 going into my '80 Z28...

theflash 04-18-2007, 01:38:31 PM Post up some pics. One thing you might need consider with the lower bolt hole is header clearance.
EricsZ28 04-18-2007, 01:49:42 PM Here is a pic of the std mount:

Here is the high performance mount:

You can see the extra height on the second mount.
You can't see it, but there is one mounting hole in center on left side of the high performance mount instead of the two on either side. Edit: actually, you can tell if you look real close.
When set side-by-side, the bolt hole for the clam shells sits about 1/4" higher on the high perf mount. Sorry, no pic of that one...

P.S. Pics linked directly to Napa's web site ;)
theflash 04-18-2007, 02:54:53 PM Excellent pics. I'm not sure about the difference between the two though.
1981z28owner 04-18-2007, 02:57:07 PM the high performance is the Z28 mount. we used those on our cars.
BonzoHansen 04-18-2007, 03:08:45 PM Interesting. For my 77, from the rockauto site.

The MT2292 is used on the 3rd gens as well. That is the type that was in my 77 when I took it apart – they appeared to be OE - but only 3 bolts are used to bolt it in. I don’t think I could have bolted the 3-hole ones in. I don't remember if there was an extra hole there or not. They sure appear to be different bolt locations.
Really, did any post-73 engine qualify as “Hi-performance Eng” :)
EricsZ28 04-18-2007, 03:17:09 PM That is interesting... especially if my Z is supposed to have the 3-hole version.

Exactly. LOL!
I'll have a look tonight to see what was holding my 400 in.
1981z28owner 04-18-2007, 03:29:37 PM i am surprised they make the z28 still. when we bought some 3 years ago for my cousins car, NAPA said they were the last ones, i guess they decided to make some more.
73Z28LT 04-18-2007, 04:01:31 PM i always sold my customers the MT2292 without any issues...even guys with z28 models...maybe just lucky..
gordonquixote 04-18-2007, 04:17:46 PM :lush: Motor mounts will definitely drive you to drinking - not that many of us need an excuse.
Get a big prybar handy and exercise some patience...you'll get it. Do an advanced search and choose 'title' instead of message body - there are some pretty smart ones on here....Just kidding about you guys being smart - hope I didn't offend anyone.

so do autozone or advance auto sell the z28 ones still?
Inher8ted 04-18-2007, 06:24:16 PM Carquest pulled 3 different mounts out for me when I needed some for my 70.
BonzoHansen 04-18-2007, 07:08:04 PM www.rockauto.com lists them. (see above)
EricsZ28 04-19-2007, 08:44:07 AM Alright, here is what is currently in my car with the new mount sitting next to it:

I'm not sure why that is linking and not showing the picture, but anyways... Obviously, it is the same as what is in my Z28. I'm not sure if those are original or not (the car came with a 400 sbc).
Unless there is another hole under that mount, I can't see how the 3-hole version even bolts in there...
BonzoHansen 04-19-2007, 10:02:47 AM That is how mine mounted.
