View Full Version : choosing a cam
Charlie Brengun 01-05-2005, 01:45:00 PM okay.. another post about choosing a cam.. i'm sorry..
anyway, i'm going to order a new cam next month and want it to be a suitable one, i'm thinking of getting a crane energizer 272-h10 (http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/3386/products/108827/H-272-H10-SB-Chevrolet-Hydraulic-Flat-Tappet-Energizer-Camshaft-Kit.htm) and changing the valve springs (http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/2065/products/81639/SB-Chevrolet-1_255-Single-Valve-Spring-and-Retainer-Kit.htm).
although i haven't got these parts yet i'm going to change my rearend gears into 4.11's. keep the th350 with stock convertor and i'll be running 295/50r15 tires.
the engine is a stock goodwrench 350 with stock heads, it should have 8.50 to 1 compression. it has a qjet for a carb and it's exhaust is a set of long tube headers and 40 series flowmaster mufflers.
so is my choice of cam the right one? it's going to be the first i do any real engine work so i'd like to feel some difference with my right foot after i finish..
any guesses on how much torque and hp the engine will put out with this cam?

Lowend 01-05-2005, 03:52:00 PM I would use a dual pattern cam in this case.
I would reccomend the Isky 264/270 Mega cam
214/221@050
.450/.465 lift
112 Lobe Seperation
The dual pattern will do a nice job of compensating for the crappy targetmast exhaust port.
The wide lobe seperation will help with torque production by keeping cylinder pressures up at low RPM's.
Use PN 200264/271-12 to ket the matched kit of Cam, lifters, Valvesprings, Shims, Retainers, and Poly Locks

Lowend 01-06-2005, 11:15:00 AM yeah - it just looks funny on their website.
The wise man would call up and order over the phone.
Mwilson 01-07-2005, 02:28:00 AM thats alot of gear do you do much street driving?
(forget the interstate!)
My car ran the exact same time 1/8 mile with 3.31 or 4.11?
Charlie Brengun 01-07-2005, 02:54:00 AM it might be sometime before i get that 4.11 rear end, how will that cam perform with my 2.73 rear end gears?
hmm.. interstate, i do do a lot of streetdriving but i´f i´m doing 3500 rpm at 70 mph i can live with that.. speeding is way to expensive here (ask me how i know http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif)
me being a natural born fool i´ll use the phone and become a wise man for once http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif thanks lowend

Lowend 01-07-2005, 03:34:00 AM That one will work pretty well with 2.73's
I would say a 3.55 would be perfect
Charlie Brengun 01-07-2005, 05:37:00 AM nice http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif well thanks for the info, i´ll make a post when i´ve got the cam (prolly for some installation help http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif)

81Z28355 01-07-2005, 03:07:00 PM I have a 3:73 gear in mine and its ok for a short distance on the highway, but to keep up with traffic I am turning 4 grand.
That cam should be good for your application and without any problem run low 15's

Dang, what is your speed limit? 80? My old '71 with 3.73's would turn about 3000 at 60.
Mwilson 01-07-2005, 05:56:00 PM Dang my 4.10 turns 3100 at 60
im a 3.42 guy though
Charlie Brengun 01-07-2005, 06:23:00 PM well dang.. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
a little help from smokemup.com gives me the following stats.. (with 295/50r15 wheels, th350 trans, 3000 rpm) don't how accurate that site is though
4.11 -> 55 mph
3.73 -> 61 mph
3.55 -> 63 mph
3.42 -> 65 mph
