Does anyone know the model # for a stock 1974 Type LT Camaro w/ a 350 2bbl? I went to 2 Advance Auto Parts yesterday & they claim that the oil filter for my car is unavailable.

you should be able to get that info off their site. they have a real good set up for customer cars that will also keep vehicle records such as mileage and time intervals for services. they also had a catalog section on their to. at least they had it there 2 years ago when i worked for them.

80Z + 472in = Cadmaro.

Hey!

Valvoline uses the Fram numbering system for their Maxlife filters. So, the Fram #PH30 should correspond for the short filter.

Edit: Just checked Valvoline's site & here are the available numbers:

Thanks for your replies, but I still can't determine the Max Life Model for my car.

What filter are you using now? name and number.

Well, according to the Valvoline site, there's no filter available. You'll see what I mean when you click on sizes & grades. The Fram #30 is not there.

If you want, try a Purolator Pure One, which I suspect is the same as Maxlife. The # for the AcDelco long filter 1218 is: PL34631

Hope this helps.

Before I forget, I think you'll find this site quite useful: http://www.oilfilterstudy.com/

Don't use the Pure One, it flows like crap. Use the Purolator PremiumPlus!

These filters mentioned don't compare to the Wix 51061 or the NAPA 1061 take and cut a Wix filter open and compare it to what your running as you will see quite a differance in quality.

On the racing engines we build we plug the oil filter bypass to force the oil through the filter and some of my customers have tried the cheap filters mentioned as the engines loose oil pressure due to not enough filter paper now with the bypass not pluged how much oil is really being filtered as most of the oil is being bypassed.

There is a reason those filter don't cost much and they can be bought at the department stores.

What do you think of the K&N filters, are they crap too or are the acceptable?

you can always take a ph30 and compare it to the ph8 the gasket i believe is the same size it is just a bit longer, so if you have the clearance you can run that (the valvoline maxlife had the '8' listed).

I have never run one of those filters and before I did I would cut it open and compare it to the Wix or NAPA as we have done a lot of home work on filters we run and have had good luck with the filters we use now.

Is the PH30 an upsize from the PH8? I recall reading something on this site about going w/ a larger oil filter. I do have plenty of clearance, so it might work.

Other way around, the 8 is larger

The PH30 is the recommended replacement oil filter for my vehicle. So, if I wanted to upsize, the PH8 would be the way to go?

no i checked it out tonight at work, the ph8a has a much bigger gasket.

i didnt see any others on that list that looked like it would work. k and n filters are best when used with synthetics because they last a bit longer than 3k miles (like synthetics). any good 2 micron filter (like a bosch or tough gaurd) should be fine for you.

You might want to look at Maxlife #5, the Fram PH5 is the equivalent of AC Delco PF1218, the longer filter for SBC.

oh youre right i didnt even see the 5 on the list, i thought it was strange they wouldnt have it on there. good catch http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif use a 5 if you have clearance.

Yep, I stand corrected, it's the PH5. The PH8 I think is for a Ford. The PH13 and the PH5 are also the same filter in size, but the 13 does not have the anti drain back valve in the filter.

Will the Max Life #5 work on my stock 1974 350 2bbl?

Yep, it should fit. It's just a little longer than the stock size. It was used on trucks as OEM. That's the only size I run now, even with headers.

i use the napa filters mentioned above #1061 made by wix. you can get them at napa for under 5 bucks a piece. these are the tall filters which i would think give you more filtering. they also have the shorter ones if you have clearance issues.

I crawled under my car & there is plenty of clearance, as the oil pan projects a good 4.5" below the stock oil filter, so the longer Max Life #5 should fit fine.
