We picked up a 3rd gen camaro last week for $800 "needing an engine". Sounds like it has nasty rod knock, quick inspection shows its a blown engine mount, so the header is hitting the k-member. There is a problem though, a quick smell of the oil and its obvious there is fuel in there. I think the intake gasket needs to be changed because there is coolant on the top of the intake. I know a compression test would be the right thing to do to check the rings, but there is a lack a serious lack of room under the hood. Whats the chance the intake gasket is causing fuel to puddle into the oil, or the mechanical fuel pump is leaking, and is there a way 2 check for that.

intake you can spray starting fluid or wd40 around the intake seals and if it revs then it might be that.
fuel pump not too sure about that.

I would say they prolly had trouble starting it one time and flooded the hell outta the engine. Maybe a number of times. Also could be a float issue. Doubt its the pump unless there is really high pressure.

I meant could the pump be leaking internally which is getting into the oil (ive heard of that happening)

Change the oil first, then see if you still smell gas.

If it's an early 3rd gen with a Q-Jet, the welch plugs are prone to failure.

Yeah, I'd drain the oil, and see if the problem persists.
Curious as to how this goes...

Flooded or fuel pump, either can do it. Been there, seen both. Agree, change the oil & see what happens.

The motor is supposed to be a crate motor, but I have not checked it out at all. Its an 87+ engine, all about all I know for sure about it. I will let you all know tomorrow

Change ALL fluids and start from there. That's the direction I'd would go.

why the others, cooling/tranny/rear end fluids wouldn't cause gas in the oil. we picked up oil/filter/carb spray today. I will be going around the base of the intake and carb to check for leaks, then changing the oil and setting the timing, or might do that first.
