I pulled a 350 to put into my Camaro which is a 305 with a 4 speed. The 350 came out of a truck with an automatic transmission. I have heard that I have to swap out the harmonic balancer and change my fly wheel to one off of a 350. Is there any truth to this??

You will need to pull off the flex plate and mount the flywheel. You might want to install a new bushing or bearing in the flywheel also. As fas as I know of the 400 is the only one you would want to make sure that the balancer matches the motor.I would stay with the balancer that is on the 350. No need to change.

Flywheels are different auto to stick.

Not sure about the balancer.

same balancer, need flywheel, need pilot bushing, need new starter for stick (if using stock).

305 and 350 have the same balance, so you don't have to worry about the harmonic balancer.

They should even use the same flywheel...with maybe one exception. I think the newer 350's with the 1 piece rear seal require a difference flywheel. What year is the 350?

So, reuse everything from the 305, except maybe the flywheel.

thanks guys I called Checker Auto parts and apperantly for a 78 camaro the balancer, flywheel, and starter all have the same part number for a 350 and a 305 with a 4 speed. I just wanted to confirm my doubts by having some of you experts shed some light on it.

I dont know what year the 350 is comming out of. The guy selling it to me has it in a jeep, but he said it came out of a 70's truck.

Simple-if the 305 flywheel doesn't bolt up you may need a one-piece seal type. If it bolts up you are all set.
You will have to install a pilot bushing into the rear of the crank.

If its from a 70's truck you should be fine and it will all bolt up. Don't forget to make sure there is a nice new pilot bushing in the end of the crank for the nose of the transmission.

What 4-speed was behind your 305??

I ask b/c a 3.50 low geared Sag won't last very long at all here behind a 350!!

2.54 Sag should do OK for a while, imho..

I converted my 305 to a 350 about 6 years ago on my 80. It also has a saginaw trans.

I beat the hell out of the saginaw andit has never let me down. Some say I am lucky but don't let the Saginaw name fool you. They were built at a time when cars actually had something called torque. No it is NOT bulletproof, but it also does not cost $2K to replace. You can buy a complete rebuilt unit around here for $600. That being said, I am not scared to blow the crap out of it. At $600 it is an easy swap. If you want an M-22 or something that everyone says you need, plan on spending $2K. Just keep in mind, that is 3.5 saginaws...
