OK found out the hard way and I want to share. I recently put a 454 in my 78Z. I needed a mechanical fuel pump with a return line so the only one I could find was one for a chevelle, anyways That will work but it hangs low just enough that when you turn it will slighly rub on the bottom of the pump. I eventually got a leak. So fo all you will need a shorty pump. It may seem to clear and everthing but it will rub away the rubber hose eventually, I got one for a 72 BB car but has no return line. But ok I guess Ill make it work. take care

Man, all you had to do was ask. I did the same thing with an original Suburban pump. Mine ended up spilling about half a gallon of fuel before I saw and smelled it. I took it back to the parts house and I talked to the manager and told him that he had better be DAMN sure that when he tells someone that a part will work that it will work. I didn't realize that the steering would come that close to the pump, and it just shaved enough off the return hose to make it go spitting fuel all over the place.

WOW!
Thanks for the info.!
I just pulled my 454 from a 75 pickup and noticed it has what looks like a brand new fuel pump on it.
It's a shame I'll have to buy a new one to replace it - but better to do that than get a surprise when it spews fuel everywhere later...
So, all you guys with BBCs are running a fuel pump with no return then?

Nope. I run a return. I have an electric pump, but it is pretty much mandatory since I run a Gen VI factory 454. They don't have a pump boss or a lobe on the cam to drive one.

I use electric, the noisy (but cheap) Carter. Ziptied 3/8 aluminum line to the original line and smoothed out the corners. It goes into a modified holley regulator and the exess pressure returns back via the original line.
Seems to work OK.

Thanks for the heads up. Any suggestions on which pump to go with?

If you're stock you can use the 396/402 pump without issue. I did the same on my Mark IV 454 before I swapped over to the Gen VI. Just order the pump for the 72 Camaro with a 402 and you will be good to go.

I have a 396 in my 79 and was going to install an electric fuel pump. What is the easiest/most effective spot on the car to install it? Should I install it by the gas tank or under the hood. Thanks

Electric pumps are better pushers than they are pullers. Install it by the tank, preferably below the tank and gravity fed.

73 Camaro - 454 - mech stock pump - from a 70 Camaro w/ 454 http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

Some stores list one. If not then ANY fuel pump for a 70-72 BBC will work (396/402)
