View Full Version : Do I have the wrong headers?

It looks like if I bolted the headers all the way up, the last tube would be completely blocking the ball mount for the clutch Z bar - as you can see below, the header is hard against the firewall AND the Z bar. The headers are are Hooker Super Comps for a big block. Was there an automatic AND a manual application?

BTW the engine does not have to move much at all to be lined up with the motor mount holes (less than 3/4 of an inch)

Yes, there are stick and auto headers!! A/C headers too on some cars due to the box!

You have to REALLY do your homework here to make DARN sure they fit as well as even then, more than likely, they will still have to be peined to fit after all is said and done!!

Look the brand up and then get into their e-cat. and read ALL the many, many notes that are either up front or WAAAAAY in the back of their header pages to see what fits and what doesn't for starters..

Thanks pdq - I'm on it. I see in the Jegs catalog that Hooker Supercomp BB headers only fit '73-81. I have a '71. I have found a few that fit my year - now is ceramic worth the $, or is plain ol' steel O.K.

Ceramic IS the way to go, but only if you know they'll clear.....so.....you'll need to buy headers that work on a 71 BB car......with manual trans.....

Above is for Summit's site.....just pic what you want from there....depending on engine specs as far as primary/collector sizes.....

Jegs is a lil ruffer as far as parts shopping, so I'd suggest you going to a specific manufacturer website for more specific information....

I have not looked at the Jegs site, but this seems odd since Chevy did not put big blocks into any Camaros after 1972. Perhaps getting your info from the header manufacturers would be a better idea than depending on Jegs or Summit. Good luck.

Although I did pass on ceramic coating ($200 = 5" tach and 2 5/8" water temp gauge!!!) I got the Hooker 2455 headers on the way - 2" tubes, 3.5" collector.

This model # is specific to 1970-1972 Camaros with big blocks. Most say 1970-1981 and some say 1967-1981. This was way way too vague for me after the hassle of trying to fit the wrong headers last night. Knocked a bunch of paint chips off of the engine last night too- just painted BTW:( .

My hooker comp's (not super comps) cleared both when it was an auto and now as a manual. They are 1 5/8" by the way.

And for us First Gen. Camaro car guy's, this is very important b/c we have so many different frame and rubber mounts to consider b/c we came w/ mild SB's, hi-po SB's and BB's!!!
