Finally got some spare income lying around - help me spend it!

Looking for 350-400 hp
I was looking at the jeg's catalog - if you had to pick between building your own motor, buying a ZZ4 or an edelbrock crate.. which would it be?

If you built your own, what would you use?
I was thinking 1 piece rear seal block, crane hyd roller cam, the best heads I can find, scat crank/rods/pistons.. but since this is my first motor I have no real specific ideas. And nobody local to help me out!

In any case I'm leaning towards a zz4.
Let me know what you think.

Build it. Pride of doing it yourself, more HP per dollar spent. Just do it. For the $6 g's your going to spend on the Edelbrock you could build a 383 that will make at least as much HP and more torque, plus probably upgrade the parts like forged pistons. I had my machine shop assemble my short block to save me time. Everything after that is pretty easy if you can follow instructions.

I`d say go for a ZZ-383

I don't think I'd concider anything but an LSx. The power and milage makes our conventional small blocks look rather silly.

go with the ZZ4.. inless you know how to build one yourself then build one yourself.. if you want it done and overwith and not have to worry about messin it up and it actually running then just get the crate.. if i knew i could build one as good as they did and have it run id build one myself but i donno how lol.. make more sence to buy a crate it you want to drive it for the summer...... Just my 2cents

My 408 small block has no trouble at all whipping up on LSx cars both at the track and on the street.

I'd go with the ZZ4 if you just want a great trouble-free performance engine with a warranty and no-hassle installation.
