View Full Version : How do you disassemble heads? (the right way) badazz81z28 06-14-2005, 11:25:00 PM Never done it before. All the help would be great. Do I need any special tools? Thanks theflash 06-14-2005, 11:59:00 PM You'll need a valve spring compressor. I was shoping around for these myself last week and found that Advanced auto parts has a new rental/purchase program on some tools. You buy it, but have 45 days to return it used or not. rustbucket79 06-15-2005, 01:59:00 AM Why not cozy up with the shop you intend to do your machine work for? We charge nothing to strip the heads if the job comes back to us. ------------------ Custom Auto, your source for quality machine work, cores and new parts at competetive pricing right here in British Columbia 1-888-563-4050 A Canadian, EH? I picked mine up about 5 years ago at pep boys for around $25. It will have a cup looking end and a flat bar looking end. Place flat bar end on bottom of valve face, cup end over spring. Turn handle till alittle pressure gets on it. Then tap the top of the retainer with a hammer. That will free up the locks. Now just crank compressors handle on down till you can get to the locks. Remove locks. Hold compressors handle tight, and push the release tab.. The spring with come up. Now remove tool, and just lift off the spring, "roll" the O ring valve seal off the valve stem. Hit the tip of the valve stem with a valve on all sides of very top. Push valve down, till you can grab valve's head, then grab it and pull rest way out. Go to next spring.. I know it sounds like alot of work, but it's not. It goes real fast. Maybe 2 min. per valve if your real slow More2Life 06-15-2005, 01:39:00 PM link to tools: http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdengi13.html link to removal: http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/howto/53398/ Chaz pdq67 06-15-2005, 08:09:00 PM The last two sets I took apart, I used; A 2 pound "SOFT" hammer, about an inch deepwell socket, another about a 1/2" deepwell under the head inside the chamber and a flat 1 x 10 board. Just hit the valve tips a decent bit to "loosen' the locks, then put a big deepwell socket on the retainer with the other one so the valves rest on it so they don't go down when you hit it and whack it about 2 - 4 times AND the locks should "pop" right out/off! You will get the feel of it b/c I can disassemble a set one heck of a lot faster then I can use a clamp or a lever to reassemble them!! pdq67 WORKS LIKE A CHARM, Imho!!!!
