Anyone hear any pros or cons with Amsoil? How does it compare to Mobil-1? I'm currently using Mobil-1 in all my cars.

Mark, I use Mobil 1 and am satisfied with the results. You will find some real diehard Amsoil fanatics here. Remember, this product is sold by individuals and directly from the company - you can't pick it up at your local Autozone or Walmart.

There is no absolute answer. The "proof" out there is debatable either way.
I don't think you'd go wrong with either one, so I wouldn't worry about it.

FWIW, I have seen a real world test that had mixed results, so I have yet to see a test that I trust that shows one as better than the other. If I remember correctly, it showed Amsoil as better in the beginning, but as the miles built up Mobil 1 was the more consistent oil. BUT, there was not enough testing done to be able to draw any accurate conclusions.

Amsoil is a good product as are Red Line, Royal Purple, Castrol Syntec, Valvoline Synpower, etc, etc, etc...

I also use Mobil 1 and have no issues with performance and protection it provides as well as the cost that is is available from local stores. I figured that if it's good enough to be recommended for my Vette, Caddy V, and Penske's Indy cars, then it has to be decent. Also, it's the one oil that is still fairly clean when I change my oil, not all black and loaded with junk.

Amsoil has been around longer than I can remember. Mobil 1 appeared on the market in the 70s. During all that time, I've never heard of Amsoil causing any engine problems. Mobil 1 had some serious problems in the 70s with their formula. It caused engine damage, and they recalled that early stuff. Since that time I've heard no additional problems with Mobil 1 either. Because of that early failure on Mobil's part, my first choice is still Amsoil, but Mobil 1 would probably be my second choice because they have many more years of experience in the synthetic market than the newcomers like Pennzoil, Quaker State, etc.

we use mobil 1 on our big rigs at the place I work at. I do know they go for 70k before draining. But they do send in samples of the oil for anaylsis and change the oil filters at certain intervals during the 70k. We used to use delo but I guess the company saves money by using mobil and the engines are backed mobil for oil related failures.

Pitt Penn Oil will be going in my car next change. Made of PA green crude oil which is the cleanest oil. From what my buddies dad tells me, a lot of race teams use this. His dad had been working there for years, dunno what his exact job title is but it's high up on the food chain.

FWIW, I don't like royal purple from personal use.

Mobil 1 used to be used by the lotus guys, but when mobil switched formulas a couple years ago (different color caps), lotus guys were killing engines.

I use Syntec, cheap and no burning off.

Both of them are better than you will ever need them to be. The debate at the hobbyist level is moot. Chemists could debate the issue for hours, I'm sure. Guys like you and me couldn't possibly have an meaninful debate other than "I like Brand XXXX, it's always worked fine for me." The differences primarily get into the level of whose witches brew of additives might be a little better for one application versus another. The base oil in both cases is very high quality stuff.

Agree 100%!!!! The base oil in pretty much ALL synthetic oils is superior to conventinal base oils.
