. This car NEVER gave me a bit of trouble, Until now!!! Just in time for Carlisle..
When the car gets hot the starter will not do anything. I replaced the solenoid, Brushes
and replaced the armature. I even replaced the Battery cables and wire ends on the
solenoid. When it sits for a while it will crank up a storm but after going for a ride and
getting things heated up it won’t crank. BTW, The car has headers that were done by
Jet Hot and the wires are no where near them.
This is the original starter.
Thanks

Mark,

Sounds like you hit the obvious stuff.

Have a look at your grounds. Current draw goes up when everything gets hot (wires, solenoid, etc.) A marginal ground may be barely good enough when things are cold, but gets revealed as the weakest link when temps go up.

If you want a PRO rebuild using YOUR core, I got a guy down the street that does GREAT work on just about ANY electric motor....starters included. To include any specifics like leaving all the original case pieces.

You need to become friends with the "di-electric grease" like I am.....I don't EVER have ground problems.....lol...

Good point Mike,
The Engine to Chassis Ground Strap is not on the car, The only other thing I can think of is
that the starter field may be shorting out when the starter casing gets real hot. Wayne do you
have phone # for this guy. Email it to me if you don’t want to post it on the board. This is the
“Born With” Starter so I would want this one done over but I think I will try a ground strap and
another starter if that does not work. How do you test the amount of amps the starter is drawing
while it is cranking? The thing spins the engine over easily when it does work.
Thanks

Email sent.

You can take the starter to one of the parts stores and they can test it there...."usually".....

It sounds like there is a problem with the windings as the heat builds up the wire expands and shorts out against itself. I had this problem when I changed my headers and they where closer to the starter than my old ones I installed a wrapped mini starter and havent had a problem since
