View Full Version : Help with timing my motor

This is my first time timing a motor so I'm a bit confused. I hooked up the timing light, started her up and set the initial timing to about 14* BTDC. My main question is, my rpm increases as I advance the timing more. My tach isn't working at the moment so I can't tell the rpm but its definately over 1200 or so. If I bring the timing back to around zero or even ATDC (up to 18* or so) I get a much more reasonable idle rpm.

Also, the car diesels a little bit after I turn it off. It almost seems like it turns over the wrong way or something. Kind of a hissing sound after I turn it off and white smoke comes up through the carb and air cleaner.

I had taken off the intake, carb and distributor to clean everything up and it was idling fine before so I'm wondering if I could be mixing up a timing issue with a carb or vacuum leak issue or maybe the dizzy being off a tooth, etc. Thanks in advance for your help

Sounds like you need to close the throttle blades some (adjust idle rpm screw on carb) so it runs slower.

You want timing between 8-18* BTDC with total between 28-38* (those or gen guide lines, your combo will tell what timing to use)

And then set you idle RPM to about 700 rpm useing the idle screw on carb.
