I remember seeing something in here about tracking VIN numbers, but I don't remember where.

My mom came over for lunch the other day and handed me something she had found while cleaning out an old drawer....an insurance card from 1980 for the 70 1/2 SS 396 car I had as a teenager. On it is the VIN. Totally cool.

Here it is, if anyone can help: 124870N558312

I purchased it in Connecticut in December of 1979, and owned it for about a year and a half, IIRC.

My guess is that it was an L34 car, but could possibly have been an L-78, possibly even a COPO. It came with the 3-piece spoiler, which I believe was special order and COPO only. We as kids didn't know or care about this decoding stuff back then. It also had a fuel gauge instead of a tach.

Don't bash me too bad, but I was forced to replace the motor with a small block LT-1 in 1980.

Any help would be appreciated....

Laws are diferrent in each state, but you may be able to get some info from your DMV. Are you trying to locate the car?

My '77 came without a title. The previous owner had bought it to build as a circle track racer (which never happened) and lost the title. I was able to title the car with a little hassle and a bunch of paperwork. The DMV told me the town that the earlier owner lived in, but wouldn't give me a name or address (although all of that info was on her computer screen). Your DMV has all of the info if you can squeeze it out of them.

I custom ordered a Formula Firebird back in '78. I'd love to be able to track that car down. I've still got the original window sticker for it.

I'm just curious to know if it's still around.

I have posted about it before, by desription, in the New England section, but nobody remembered ever seeing it. The car was real nice in 1980, for a ten-year-old car up there. I could see it survivng.

It looked almost exactly like my car now, except it was all pearl white w/black SS badges on the fenders and the proper 396 badge underneath. It was totally smokin'....IMO
