I'm just curious as to what sealant most people use under the rear main cap and rear main seal?

I off set the rear main seal and put a dab of permatex ultra black on the ends.

I put the seal in just like it comes out of the package- no sealant. I put a paper-thin smear of RTV on either side of it on the flat metal surface that the cap mates with to prevent any oil leaking past the parting line, but that's it.

A little daub of good old Permatex, "Indianhead Shellac Gasket Cement" is all on the back and both offset ends!

I use an anaerobic sealer most of the time. And I also will use GM pipe sealer with teflon. After years of warranty work, I finally figured out what the white sealer that was used at the factory on oil pan parting lines and such.

It's a thick dark brown hardening type liquid that comes in a little brown shoe polish dauber bottle..

It reminds me of molassas! I've used the stuff for more years than I care to count on just about everything. It's messy, and hard to take off but has always done me good!!

anaerobic sealer here too. And I clock the part line of the seal about 5*away from the part line of the cap.

I offset the seal so its INSIDE the seal groove area.

Helps keep it all together. Don't think I put any on the BB I have now. Kinda curious as to what it looks like some years later.

What's the anerobic sealer ? Where can you get it ?

Under the seal? I use nothing. I offset the seal parting line slightly and use a dab of silicone at that joint. a very small dab.
