View Full Version : Radiators: Northern vs. Griffin?
GetMore 03-29-2007, 11:41:08 PM Does anyone have a comparison of the two?
I was told I should run 1-1/4" tubes, and Griffin is one of the few companies that have radiators with that size.
I can get a universal 31x19 Griffin through Summit for $363.
I can get a universal 31x19 (close enough) Northern through GPSuperstore for just under $400.
The Griffin is a circle track unit, I don't know if that makes any difference.
I can't find any real information on the Northern unit. They don't give much on the site.
blown1981z28 03-30-2007, 12:06:52 AM Thoses prices are very high. I am running a Summit(Northern) 31 x 19 aluminum radiator. Summit sells them for $179.00. I have no problems, it cools great.
jester1 03-30-2007, 12:46:44 AM summit 31x19 alu griffen. $189 Im not sure where your prices come from but there is 100% difference

I run the same rad in my car. Summit 31" x 19" alum rad. It's made by northern rad and even has northern stamped on it. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SUM%2D380331&view=1&N=700+4294924500+4294839040+400304+4294810996+4294891681+4294792866+4294792670
this is a rad that don't have an auto trans cooler built into it though so if you have an auto trans you will need to pick up a good trans cooler for about $50 to go with it

GetMore 03-30-2007, 09:53:06 AM I have to have the trans cooler built in. (Maybe it's not required, but I have to have it.) That raises the prices significantly. I accept that.
I'm looking for what the differences are between the Griffin and Northern radiators.

pdq67 04-12-2007, 10:03:49 PM I lucked out and bought my Summit house, Northern brand al. rad. on sale for like $159 + S&H a while back!!

GearHead72 04-12-2007, 11:21:15 PM I have the 31x19 Summit radiator as well. Nice price and good quality. I had to modify my core support and drop the radiator mount area about an inch for everything to fit right. The stock shroud will work fine with some minor tweaks.
night rider 04-13-2007, 12:52:21 AM Nothing is ever a "bolt in" even parts that say they are.
The uni fit 31" x 19" rads are close for most F bodys though. Some guys has lucked out and they fit in w/o any mods and others have had to do alittle tweeking to get em' to fit.
Depends on year of car I think, but can't remember what has to be done for each set of years.
Some guys had to do pretty much the same thing as I did.. Remove the little rubber U's that sits on lower core support that the stock rad sits in. Then on the lower support tray theres 2-4 little humps that sticks up to hold those rubber pads.. Bend those humps down.. Then the rad will fit right in
Nate81camaro 04-13-2007, 07:53:22 AM The ones that are $189 dont have a built in tranny cooler, right? The one I bought was around $350ish (Griffin 31 X 19, I believe).
I love my radiator, but I'm going to be switching to an electric fan. At the moment, I have a 17 or 18" flex fan. I did have to cut square like ends off the stock shroud, but it fits nicely. I'm running a 195 stat, and my engine doesn't go over 180. It was fairly cool (60ish) that day, so if it gets to hot this summer, I'll switch the stat back to a 180. I figure if I run elec fans, it'll help in keeping my motor at operating temp because (while not the best choice) that flex fan pulls some major air. It sounds like I have a blower under my hood...not that you can hear it over my 2 1/2 ft worth of exhaust:smokin:

With a stock shroud and fan clutch, my temp never gets higher than the thermostat I'm running, even with the AC on.
BTW... Autozone carries them for about $110. :D :D

Nate81camaro 04-13-2007, 10:02:53 AM ^^^Really wish I would've been a member of this site back when I bought my radiator.....
