What can I use to clean these with and what kind of oil do I have to use after that? Do I have to buy their kit or can I do it on my own???? Answers would be very helpful.

Thank you http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Alise -

There's a kit in Classic Industries catalog, page 775 to clean/degrease and oil those air filters. The kit is only $8.95. You can probably find one anywhere they sell the K&N filters. I just ordered one yesterday for the 72... http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

For Monsieur El Cheapo: I bet you could get away with dishwashing detergent and warm water to clean it and some sort of lightweight oil to coat it- i.e. like a penetrating oil. The filter is made out of cotton and the oil acts as a modifier for dirt to cling to the cotton and not blow off again (I assume it also helps open up the perforations in the cotton for airflow).

For the ladies of the house,,,,, I know you have this stuff already. For the guys,, don't get caught sneeking her stuff out of the house!

Alise, tell the $#!+ Storm Magnet to get his drain pan out for you and then get out of your way. Make a strong mix of dish soap and water deep enough to 'soak' the filter. Give it a shot of 'spray and wash' on all the cotton surface to help release the oily dirt, and then soak it for an hour or so. You'll probably will have to put something light on the filter to keep it submerged. Just don't crush it or distort the screen with a heavy brick or anything. You can 'agitate' a little, but don't get violent or you'll deform the gauze filter element. Use clean warm water in the pan for your rinse and lightly agitate, do not try to rinse the filter with a running hose. Then let it AIR DRY for a day. Don't let Wayne help or he'll try to 'rush' things (like he does 'everything' but getting his car together) No Wayne, you can't use power washers or compressed air! Wash it gently and let it AIR DRY.
The oil is the hard part. WD40 doesn't work for crap, and there are only a few light machine oils that come in a spray can. Wayne can help here, tell him to go down to the gun shop and get a small can of gun oil. I'm sure you have an old small purfume spray bottle laying around (some of that cheap crap Wayne tried to pass off as an anniversery present or something). Those make a good spray bottle for the gun oil. Just keep in mind oiling the gauze is like painting (again don't let Mr. 'RUN" help here either). 3 light coats are better than one heavy soaking coat. You don't want the filter soaked and clogged with oil. Just enough oil for the gauze to absorb. Like Eric said, the gauze is the medium the air passes through. the oil is the 'sticky stuff' that clings on to the airborn dirt. Too much oil just restricts air flow.
Now tell Wayne to get out of your way so you can get something done. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Doing laundry? That's it? While you are off running around I am busy tending 3 kids, cleaning 3 bedrooms, and working on floors. Jeez, I guess I just can't do enough... Why don't you go pick up that engine (2 hours away), stop at Cabela's and get your bow tuned, then come home to a nice warm dinner with your family... Oh wait your are already doing that. That filter better be cleaned tomorow Mister..... http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks Marv!!!! Hopefully he will get it done right! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Don't put too much oil on it Wayne. We have seen a lot of issues with too much oil messing with the MAF sensor.

The filter was cheap enough spend some damn money on a kit. What did you do to service the other one?
