Who can recommend a good head gasket? I think I probably want to stay away from the Fel Pro ones, aren't they too thick? I think they're .040. Shouldn't I go with a .028 as not to cause a slight drop in compression.

I'd actually like to go with one that could slightly increase my compression if possible. As long as there's no risk involved. I'll be going with either a 64cc or 67cc head, which will be a bump up in compression over my stock 76cc heads anyway. But I'm thinking a thinner gasket over a stock one will give me a bit more.

As usual thanks to all for their much appreciated help.

Fel Pro makes a rubber coated steel shim that's about 0.019

GM still has steel shim gaskets too.

If your block is nice and straight and the heads are nice and flat go with a steel shim, unless the block was decked then I would go with the .028 gmpp head gaskets.

fel pro # 7733SH1 non coated steel shim 4.100" x .015" thick
Fel pro # 1094 coated steel shim same specs as above

The fel pro your thinking of is the 7733PT which is a 4.166" x .041" thick std. rebuilder's gasket
