View Full Version : Comp. Test today
zerex 05-28-2005, 03:10:00 AM I would guess not to bad. Been wanting to do one for a while but couldn't get ahold of gauge.
1 - 155 2 - 155
3 - 143 4 - 150
5 - 145 6 - 155
7 - 141 8 - 150
So what do you guys think. Was thinking of going little more cam when I swap over to TH200r4 and 3.73 this winter (I hope). Was thinking of trying to pick up some Vortec heads since good friends with local junkyard and can get good deals :P Have a block to build just wondering if should abuse this one some first http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
night rider 05-28-2005, 05:57:00 AM Cyl seal looks pretty good, your running real close in each cyl. So thats a real good thing.
On 3, 5, 7 did you try squirting alittle oil in the them and re testing??? If so what did it show then??
I wouldnt go to a bigger cam though!!!!
Atleast not right now, untill you got alittle more compression (lower cc heads, thinner gaskets, or low cc pistons, etc)
your #'s right now are stock-ish low compression, or high compression with big cam engine.
For performance use you really want to see around atleast 175 psi.. I like 180-195 psi my self for a street/strip engine.
I got around 217 psi with my 10.18:1 355 with a 272/284* cam
The bigger the cam is, the lower your cyl pressure goes.
1978LT 05-28-2005, 01:44:00 PM Noooo like night rider said, don't go with a bigger cam, at least unless you put on a set of smaller chamber heads. What is your combo now? 76cc chamber smog heads? Sounds like a rebuilt 8.5 motor with rebuilder pistons(they have short deck heights). If you get Vortecs, THEN compliment them with a nice cam, around 215-220 @ .050 on the intake side, and 225-230 @ .050 on the exhaust side. Sounds like you have a pretty solid engine to start with though!!
OH, BTW, this friend you have that works at a junkyard, see if he can hook you up with TWO sets of Vortecs http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif My nephew is bugging the heck out of me for a set. His core engine came with the worst performance heads ever (193 swirl port truck heads), so keep me in mind http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif I'm good for the money (he gives me $100/week to save for rebuilding).

zerex 05-28-2005, 02:43:00 PM Well of couse guys not going to just swap in bigger cam :P I know better than that. And wouldn't go very big anyways will save that for block sitting in my garage :> I will keep my eyes out for couple sets. He just crushed about everything so patiently waiting for more stuff to get in.

SURE hope he didn't crush any engine parts!
Junkyards around here don't crush ANYTHING. Last time I went junkyard hopping I saw cars I remember seeing in high school, and that was 1989!
zerex 05-28-2005, 05:24:00 PM You bet, it's a small yard. He just bought it so was wanting to start fresh. Everything that wasn't something specific or someone wanted saved got crushed(he even crushed something he was suppose to save for me but forgot). He gets alot of cars in though one day last week he got 8, hehe.
jim72ss 05-31-2005, 08:08:00 PM I went to a junk yard this pass friday was looking for some parts.
And right in the crushed car pile i saw a 70to73 camaro. Grill was still ok bumper was bent up i yelled at the guy what he was thinking.
Man i cryed walking out of there

Most places, all they care about is the scrap value. They don't care what they have.

Like Cornholio says....bungholio! At least the yards around here never crush anything. Heck there is a yard with a sweet '70 Nova, a '69 Chevelle, and an early '70s Corvette sitting in the back, and the guy wants to keep them complete! I applaud people like that http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
rogerh 05-31-2005, 09:49:00 PM The local junkyards here don't crush anything either. They don't have a lot of Camaros but about a quarter of the lot is old Mustangs.
