Has anyone ever used these heads? I'm wondering if they're a good, and not too expensive nice upgrade over my stock 333882 heads on my '77 350.

They feature 165cc intake runners, 67cc combustion chambers, and have 2.02 / 1.60 valves.

They seem like a good head, I'm just wondering if for $325 complete per head, they're not just a waste of money. I wonder if there would be a big difference between these, and say the Vortec Bow-Tie heads.

Thanks.

If you are looking for a budget top end, buy the vortecs featured at jegs. I believe a fully assembled vortec is $269 each. If you have a cam under about .460 they will work.

Easiest 40HP you can buy...

Doesn't Brodix make the only cast-iron 165 cc head available??

pdq - nope, summit makes them (so there's at least 2 companies).

Adam, I'd get these instead:

599 (plus tax, and S&H) for a set of vortecs VS 650 (plus tax, and S&H) for a set of Summit heads?

That's a no brainer. If you need valve covers, self aligning rockers, and an intake, but your short on cash, this is what I'd do:
1 - Go to junkyard for valve covers and self aligning rockers.
2 - Search this forum, or go on ebay to buy an intake.

Trust me, you're gonna kick yourself (just like I'm doing now:mad:) if you didn't want to get vortecs because "you already have roller rockers and an intake for a standard head". It's an easy 40hp.

What cam are you running?

Summit isn't "making" those heads. Chances are they are Brodix. The Summit aluminums are Brodix IK series heads.

I have a set of vortec heads with a brand new set of comp roller tip rockers for sale if you are interested. VERY reasonable.

Dang - I didn't think about the Summit named products. Good point!

Thanks for the info guys, but here's my dilema.

- I have a brand new edelbrock aluminum manifold (old style), which is another reason why I need 'old style' heads.

- I have all new roller rockers, etc., again, for old style heads.

- I want to keep the 'stock' look of the perimeter style valve covers. Just don't like the look of center-bolt ones.

I would think that these heads (if their Brodix or Summit), would give me some HP increase over the stock 331882's, correct? Maybe not the 40hp gain advertized for the Vortecs, but something noticable, especially with the bigger valves and 67cc combustion chamber vs. the stock 76cc chamber.

I'm not looking to run 12's, race the car or anything like that, just want a nice little upgrade in the stock performance of my '77 LM1.

Thanks guys.

I think the # you meant is 333882. They'd probably get you a little more power, but I still think the Vortec's are the better choice.

You can get whatever your heart desires (as long as your pockets allow it). I was in the same boat as you (for the most part) when I built my 355. I already had the roller rockers for the standard head. I had yet to buy an intake. If I would've sat down and listed out everything, I only would've spent an additional 250 bucks if I went with Vortec's, and then I would've been able to sell my roller rockers, so it was actually less than 250!
If you decide to get em, you could sell your intake and rr's. Have you even checked out if your able to return them?
I too like the look of a standard head valve cover. There are adapter kits out there that let you run the old style valve covers, one of the guys over at LS1tech.com has them on his LT1 camaro.
I'd hate for you to be in the same situation I'm in now.....I COULD'VE HAD 40 EXTRA HP FOR UNDER 250!!!

Without getting on a rant here,,, sumit doesn't 'make' anything. Everything sold under the summit house brand name is something contracted out to the lowest bidder. Is that what you want on your motor?

Are the summit heads IK's or RHS or what?? I don't know. Just my gutt feeling is they are an offshore clone of something Sergi thought he could make a buck on.

Hey, they wouldn't put their name on just anything - it says so right in the catalog:D :D

Marv, you don't happen to have a sn over at LS1tech, do you? I remember seeing some guy w/ the username Marv, and he really seemed to know his stuff. Just wondered if it was you or not.

Nope,, not me. When it comes to all that high tech fancy gadgetry of the LSx motors I'm LOST.

I remember one time when I switch out a set of '882s for a set of stock '462 castings. The difference was very noticable in a positive way. The "Summit" iron heads that you're asking about are supposed to make better power than the old "fuelie"/double hump heads like the '462s. I think the Summit heads be a nice upgrade since you want to use your current intake manifold. Plus, you more than likely ain't gonna find some old fuelie heads and have them reworked cheaper than you can buy those "Summit" heads.

Save your money buy some good heads that will make some power.Don't but cheap heads you are throwing away money and you going to wish down the road you would have save a little more for better heads. You are not going to notice 40hp if you even get that.
