Did a search and couldn't find any info on this subject. Has anyone used any of the pertronix igniton components? I am thinking of installing one of their Ignition kits and high voltage coils in my '74. I currently have the stock single points distributor and coil.

I would like to maintain the stock look, and don't wont to go with an HEI setup.

I see they now make a set up with lobe sensing abilities that doesn't require the distributor to be removed. Anyone used this one? Any good or bad results with their kits?

Thanks

Do yourself a favor and don't bother with anything from Pertronix. It is all garbage. I had someone warn me before using it, and I didn't listen either. It failed just like clockwork.

OK...I just have to chime in with my experience here. I've been running a Pertronix Ignitor in my Toyota for over 10 years without a hitch. I've been selling Pertronix products for 13 years (I work at an auto parts store) and RARELY see one fail that isn't due to the installer hooking up the wires backward. Pertronix has been around since the late 60's (under the name Per-Lux up until about 6 years ago) and have branched out into other products like exhaust as well as expanded their ignition products line with some really nice stuff. Opinions are OK, but do some research also. If you're convinced they suck...so be it. But I have had 13 years of success with their products. (and please don't think I'm trying to sell anything here...I'm not.)

It is easy to blame inferior design on operator error. My magnet wheel's cheap plastic retainer came apart and destroyed the pickup when all the magnets started falling out. The coil itself shorted internally and would no longer create spark. Operator error? No. Inferior design and parts? Yes. I personally know 4 other people that have had exactly the same thing happen. If I know that many, then I am sure there are hundreds if not thousands more. Unless the design of the pickup and magnet wheel has changed in the past 4 years, then my opinion has not changed. I used the product, the product bit me and did not work as advertised. I sent it back for a refund and I won't use the product again. My opinion is as informed as it needs to be on the subject, thanks.

I used it for about 10 years when I started getting carb problem symptoms then one day it died completely. So I am using up my points I bought many years go.

Hey, like I said....it's OK to have an opinion. My definition of operator error is people connecting the red wire to neg and black wire to pos...this WILL cook the pickup unit (on the original style Ignitor, not the Ignitor II). I'm not knocking anyone here or saying anyone's opinion is "wrong"...just giving my honest experience. Everyone here has been helpful and honest with me, so I feel that I should respond with the same. Personally as far as GM products go....I believe in HEI all the way!

Agreed. I run them in all my vehicles.

Ive been running ther Pertronix Flame Thrower Hei Distributor on my 400+ hp 350 for 5 years with no trouble, I think anytime that you try to make an old piece act like a new piece then your going to have troubles. If you arent doing the concorse thing might as well enjoy the benefits of a better ignition system and put in an aftermarket distributor. Just my opinion.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Sounds like most have had problems with the rotating magnet ring. They have a lobe sensing version with no magnetic ring now. Might not change anything, but might be better as less moving parts to cause problems etc...

I think I will try one of the new design. Hopefully I will have good luck like some others have had and not problems like many others.

I will try and post back at least with the initial results.

Thanks again for the information.

I bought the one from Crane with the rev limiter. Not in the car yet.

Don't go with Pertronix. I had a pertronix distributor. Over the last year I have had to replace every piece of it.
