in the past, i that i have installed this particular SBC motor in 2 different cars using the same flexplate in question.

today, i was trying to bolt them to a 400 trans (this combo has been mated before) but couldn't get the bellhousing bolts snugged down all at the same time. there would be a 1/2 inch gap on either side.

 after about 2 hours of struggling, i rotated the flexplate about 180 degrees and finally i was able to mate the motor and tranny with ease.

my questions are:

1. is my flexplate severly warped? the motor ran fine before.

2. what are common causes for warping?

THANKS!

First, both line to the crank using the little dowel hole. Regardless if the dowel pin is there or not..

Second, I really doubt if an auto tranny flexplate can warp b/c it won't get hot enough like a flywheel can if a clutch slip's a lot and heats it up really hot which it CAN. My pressure plate got hot enough b/c it was slipping, that it ruined it's fingers is how I know!!!

What can happen is that flex plates can crack right around where they mate at the crank flange OD which causes them to make noise before it breaks completely in two!!

hope this helps..

And there are four types of flywheels and flex plates here!!

350SB and all the other SBs, 400SB, 427BB and all the other BB's and 454/502 BB as well as 10.5" and 11" dia's!

And some 11" will mount a Truck 12" clutch so make DARN sure you have the right one!!
