Getting ready to load up my 454 block, Scat 4.25 crank, Eagle 3D 6.385 rods, Billet flywheel, and SFI balancer and take it to the machine shop.
My SRP pistons did not come in like they were supposed to yet though.
My AFR 305's with the CNC chambers are supposed to be here next week, we will see on that though.
Have not decided on a cam yet, know I want a solid roller.
Thinking along the lines of the Comp Cams 292 with 254 intake 260 exhaust duration at .050 (292/298 advertised) and .660 intake .666 exhaust duration.
What are your thoughts?

so your building a 496. how much compression are you going with, and you could of gone with more camshaft. The bigger motors respond well to .700 lift cams. It this a street motor, race motor? What are you goals for HP and Tq?

I just came off the dyno with those heads, they make big power.

It will have 10.2:1 compression.
I do not have a camshaft yet, was looking for recommendations on that.
It will be a street strip toy and am hoping for 700 HP and somewhere close on torque, Not sure if I will get it though.

You wont make 700, but I bet you'll hit 600.

Ok i have seen 2- 496 engines built here in the last year that were both dynoed. The first was with 10.25-1, with Pro topline 320 recport heads and a hydraulic roller aprox cam specs were .648 lift with .254/.264 @ .050 that motor made 650 Hp and 645 qt.

The second was my Buddy's. it had 14.0-1 compression big solid roller, .737/.742 lift with .265/.271 @ .050 on a 112 LSA the heads were Edelbrock rpm performer oval port heads. The ported the ever living shit out of them, and should of went rec port? But they had them and had the time to port them.

They made 737 HP and 670 TQ.

The first 496 is a decent street motor, the second is a race motor only.

Hope this helped.

That is kind of what I thougt and was shooting for between 600-650 with this motor.
A couple shops and distributors I talked to said 700 was well within reason with this set up.
If I get 650  I will be very happ but if it hits 700 :D all the better.

What would you recommend for the cam?

You are in the ballpark for the cam, very close. No reason to go killer on the lift for a street motor, although the AFR's respond well to it.

Michael (Old School) recently did a 496 solid roller street motor that I was involved in. AFR 325s, 260/266 duration, 10.7 compression, etc. No numbers on it yet but I'm estimating right at 690-700 HP. It's in the car and hopefully will have ET's posted soon.

My new 468 with 12.3-1 compression, AFR 305 heads with cnc chambers, solid roller cam .691/.684 and .262/.270 @ .050 on a 112 LSA. dart intake and BG 825 mighty demon carb and a 2" Hooker header. It made 708 Hp and 622 TQ.

2 different techs at Comp said the Comp 292 solid roller was to big for the 10.2 compression and suggested going with the 286 roller.
248 intake 254 exhaust duration at .050, advertised 286 intake 292 exhaust duration and 653 intake 660 exhaust lift.

They both said I would be a lot happier with the smaller cam and the motor would be a lot more usable and fun to drive.

What are your thoughts and suggestions for the cam specs?
