View Full Version : Air filter height question (K&N)

I need to pick up a little clearance between my hood and factory air cleaner lid on my air-induction '80Z. The motor mounts are a bit worn and the motor shakes a bit (they'll be replaced in the future). The lid on my air cleaner is now slightly rubbing against the hood when the motor shakes. Since I am using the stock air-induction setup, I don't want to change to a drop-base air cleaner.

K&N make two filters which would give added clearance. The makey 2.5" and 3.0" filters in the diamerter I need. I am pretty sure the 3.0" would do the job, but the 2.5" would definitely give the clearance I need. I'm concerned about placing the air cleaner lid closer to the carb. Will this cause tuning or performance problems? Also, should a 2.5" K&N will outflow the 3.4" paper element

I appreciate any input.

The stock paper element is 3.4" tall.

im not an expert, but all ive heard about the KN is how much air they flow. seems like it would outdo the paper

or you could do what i did and use the shorter K&N with their extreme flow top. Just my 2 Pennies

Damon did some research a while back and found that placing the K&N lid too close to the carb (like in my case) actually created tunig problems.

If the K&N filter with the stock metal lid doesn't work, maybe I'll give the K&N lid a try. But based on Damon's research I'm going to avoid it for now.

I appreciate the input, though. Thanks.

Measure your clearance as it is NOW between the lid and the top of the tallest part on the carb (usually the choke airhorn). Make sure you will end up with AT LEAST 1" of free clearance there with a shorter filter. If it's just barely rubbing with the stock 3.4" filter it should have plenty of clearance with a 3" unit.

Damon,

Thanks for clearing that up. The car is at the frame shop right now getting all new subframe bushings. That should give me a little more clearance between the hood and lid since the old bushings are pretty well crushed. Even if it only give me a fraction of an inch or so, it will help. At least it can't hurt.

I know it's expensive, but the K&N Xtreme filter lid is a nice investment. It's another 500 cfm of flow!!

Summit makes their own version and it is a bit less expensive than the K&N one. Check out the summit catalog.

Anyone taken a look at the "Kool Street" filter from Accel? I was planning on going with one of those when my 80 scoop hood goes on. Anyone know if it will fit?

Well, after shopping around for size, I found this -

K&N - E-3740 14" x 2.3" (59mm)

ACCEL Kool Blue - KR 3005 14" x 2 1/4" (57mm)

Both applications were for a Peugeot 604 2.8L V-6. Shortest 14" filters I can find in a 'performance' style.....

Stock 1980Z with air induction filter size is 12" diameter, not 14".

My AC Delco 348 paper filter was only 3" tall. My current K&N E1500 is 12"x3". I get the very slightest of rub in certain places, but the Performer manifold is a bit higher, and I still run the Qjet thermal spacer gasket.

The Extreme lids only come in 11" and 14" diameter. The 11" would probably work OK, but might look a bit off.

A K&N rep told me that the lid is made in 12" diameter, but they don't list it on their website. The only color they offer is the black and the PN is 66-1202. It retails for $116.

I have older worn motor mounts so before it warms up and smooths out the vibrations cause some minor clanking with the hood. New, firm, motor mounts would probably help a little.

Hey MItch, that intake manifold you have, is it taller then the stock intake? I am about to drop my rebuilt motor in my car(80z) and i have the Performer rpm air gap, everyone has told me, that with a drop base air cleaner I should be just fine, I sure hope so, and it sounds like you are or might be running intothe same situation....

I run the Weiand Stealth. It was the shortest dual plane/spreadbore aftermarket intake made at the time. I measured them all and that's why I bought it. I has an advertised RPM range to 6000. Since my motor doesn't spin past 5500 it got the job.

The Stealth is taller than the stock intake, but not by much. I used to have the exact measurements but they are long gone. I believe it was under an inch. I think that with a 3" K&N I'll be alright. If it doesn't work the 2.5" will for sure.

Mitch- I don't think that K&N piece will work.

http://shop.knfilters.com/KNShop/Product.aspx?pid=66-1202

It looks like it's for the 12" air cleaners, that used the 9" or so filters. The way the lid bumps up, it would never sit down far enough to close the hood.

Todd,

Since I wasn't really considering one yet I hadn't looked at a pic of it. The rep said it should be the same height as my stock piece but judging from that pic... no way.
