Hey all I am rebuilding a co-workers friends motor that was rebuilt only 180 miles ago. Long story short for some reason the bottom end wasn't getting enough or no oil at all.

In looking at the block the front oil gallery plugs look to be set to far in but I don't know what correct depth is supposed to be. Does anybody have that info?
It's on a '96 SBC 350. Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure.

I thought they were supposed to be flush w/ the front of the block or set in just a little bit.

Actually, looking close in the pic the side 2 plugs look like they have holes in them. The previous "rebuilder" mustve done that to put some more oil on the front of the cam/back of the timing gear. But why its not getting oil to the bottom isnt a good sign.

If the center plug was into far it would shut the oil off the the front main and number one rod I would say the block was not properly cleaned and maybe the clearances were to tight but after looking this really looks like debris.

Looks like those are OEM plugs and to really clean a block correctly all those plugs have to be removed.

Those 2 plugs are at the end of the lifter oil galleys (left and right side). They're just dead holes at that point- end of the line for the lifter galleys, which are fed from the rear of the block. You'd have to whack them in there quite a ways before you had any problems from it, I would think. Look for your problem elsewhere- that ain't it.

Check out the cam bearing in the first pic. Check all the oil gallie plugs and make sure you check the allen plug under the rear main journal.

Thanks for the replies guys. The block is going to the machine shop tomorrow. It seems the previous builder said he had the block bored 30 over but I found standard pistons in it. I'm going to have it checked, cleaned and I'll give it a good cleaning before I put it back together.
