View Full Version : DYNO Numbers
Grumpy 427 03-19-2007, 11:57:11 PM Hey guys we got a final set of numbers on the new 468. Wet met out initial goal of what i wanted o end up with. Good planning on my part i guess LMAO.
708 HP @ 6750 and 620 TQ @ 4750. Good average HP from 5000-7000 of 664 HP.
I plan on spraying it on the dyno tomorrow night as well. a 150 shot then a 250 to get a good solid tune up.
Trainman 03-20-2007, 12:01:39 AM LOL....Holy Crap man! 700HP not quite enough so you have to spray it? Nice job!
Rick WI 03-20-2007, 12:27:54 AM Did they measure the manifold vacuum?
Grumpy 427 03-20-2007, 12:35:46 AM yeah 10" . It idles at 1200 rpm. We played with timing after we got the fuel and air bleeds sorted out. the timing ened up at 38 total. we also retarded the cam 4 degrees too works best there. It was installed at 109 now its at 113. the cam is on a 112 LSA.
Urban Samurai 03-20-2007, 12:44:45 AM I sure hope there is some video of this thing in the future.:)
Rick WI 03-20-2007, 12:56:41 AM Yikees, that is a fookin ton.
I think you would really see that engine come around with a big 4500 intake and Dominator on it. My other post gives you an idea where you'd be after that conversion.
I figured power brakes would work on the top end!
Throttle response I am sure is excellent though.
Grumpy 427 03-20-2007, 01:06:33 AM yeah i am running an 825 mighty demon, i called BG this morning too and they assured me that that carb would flow every bit of 940 cfm and that it would be big enough for this combo. The motor used in the neighbourhood of 825 cfm on the dyno. so it wasnt a restriction. The throttle response is incredible lolol
79ZED 03-20-2007, 02:04:44 AM Wow, excellent numbers Grumpy, more than I thought it would make, but you have a healthy cam and lots of compression. I think the big factor though has to be the AFR heads. That motor will be a killer at the strip! Congrats!
John
Rick WI 03-20-2007, 11:57:54 AM Well at least you have the data that indicates it very well may flow 900+ CFM at some level but at about 40" of pressure drop!
Maybe that's why Barry G sucks in Pro Stock.
Here is an FYI that I have found out in past dyno sessions with my motor. When I refresh I break in the motor with a carb as I don't want to rip out the EFI from the car. A Holley HP 750 flows 830 CFM at 6" pressure drop. 4" less than the BG 825.
Damon 03-20-2007, 12:22:32 PM Good numbers- mission accomplished. It gives me hope that my motor, using the same heads and cubes as you but with milder everything else might just hit 550HP on motor. Pretty amazing what you get get from box-stock aftermarket heads these days, isn't it?
craggar 03-20-2007, 12:31:30 PM I didn't think you'd have a problem finding the extra hp after the first couple pulls. I agree with Rick though, you'd pick up more with the Dom. but for you plans it won't matter a whole lot.
Good luck tonight.
no-nitro 03-20-2007, 02:02:25 PM congrats grumpy!!!
74RAT 03-20-2007, 06:29:00 PM good numbers!! glad to see you hit your goal. gotta love that.
Grumpy 427 03-21-2007, 01:26:37 AM Well tonight i got to join the 4 digit club. Its pretty exciting to see the motor make all that noise on the dyno, you think it going to come off and kill you.
well the motor made 903 HP @ 6250 and 922 Tq @ 4500 this was on my version of a sharp tune 150 shot.
The 250 Shot we made 1006 HP @ 5750 and 985 TQ at 4250. Did a couple of things to get the fuel ratio right, but it paid off. The Edelbrock kit is a very efficient kit, the spread between the jets is only 4. Very good fuel distribution with this kit,
I still cant belive it
Rick WI 03-21-2007, 01:31:32 AM Nice job Grumpy, they sure do jump when the O's hit the waterbrake. I'm real happy for you.
craggar 03-21-2007, 01:40:46 AM Very nice results Sheldon. Where did the fuel pressure end up for the juice? You'll be flying if it all hooks.
jester1 03-21-2007, 01:46:36 AM another 8 second ride
Urban Samurai 03-21-2007, 01:55:25 AM Dont see to many brite side people making numbers like that, do ya. I am very happy for you, you have quite a beast there.
Grumpy 427 03-21-2007, 01:58:09 AM Craig after talking to Steve johnson from Edelbrock, i set it at 6-1/4 i had been running it at 6-3/4, and he said that was too fat. So after the 150 pull we looked at the plugs, and it was all good. the first 250 shot showed that the BSFC was still not right and that we were too fat. so a jet change solved that and gave me another 46 HP. So the plugs look good, the nitrous tune ups are safe, no danger of detonation. i am one happy flatlander
Grumpy 427 03-21-2007, 02:03:34 AM Craig i spoke to Steve johnson from edelbrock, and he told me i had been running too much fuel PSI. so i dropped it down to 6-1/4 for the dyno from 6-3/4. The 150 shot was a good test, I used the pills the kit said too, took out 8 degrees timing and let it fly. we got 200 out of a 150 hit. the plugs looked good, and the BSFC numbers looked real good. so we had that tune up nailed.
The first 250 hit , was still fat so we swapped pills end for end, took out 12 degrees timing and hit it. we picked up 46 Hp over the first 250 hit and the plugs looked great, and the BSFC numbers were right in line. So i have some good info and learned alot. the dyno is worth every damn penny thats for sure.
jester1 03-21-2007, 03:26:44 AM This is a 468 correct? I thought you were building a 496 all along.
Would you mind sharing the specs to your old 427 please?
thanks
ps now its time to fog it dont you thing ;)
Marv D 03-21-2007, 10:10:13 AM I told you it was going to be an animal!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrts Sheldon. I don't care how much N2o, blowers or turbos,, making 4 digits is just flat impressive. Great job
rscamaro73 03-21-2007, 11:21:01 AM Effin schweet bro.
Glad it all came together nicely for you.
NOW....video....
Later...real times :)
PS - care to mention just HOW expensive this complete dyno session was ? I'm curious. I talked to one place in Cali....and was WOW....
craggar 03-21-2007, 11:39:58 AM Dont see to many brite side people making numbers like that.
:D
That kit seems pretty accurate Sheldon.
TooLateVTEC 03-21-2007, 12:26:02 PM Congrats on getting where you wanted to,its ALWAYS good when that happends
Those 4 digits on the squeeze are crazy!
Grumpy 427 03-21-2007, 08:53:11 PM Well because i had the whole motor built and machined there i will get a better deal on the dyno time
But generally to bolt a motor on the dyno, and test for a day is around $500.00. Once i get the bill i will break it down for you.
The 427 was a .060 over so it was a 440 BBC the bottom end was all forged GM with 2 bolt mains, 3/8 rods with ARP bolts. TRW pistons with 11.25-1 compression with the Edelbrock rpm performer marine oval port heads. My engine builder flowed the heads, then did a bit of bowl work and port work to them. After that they flowed 318 on the good port, 288 on the bad , and 255 on the exhaust Not bad for a little head . The cam was a hydraulic roller .648/.648 lift with .245/.255 @ .050 on a 112 LSA. I chose that LSA for nitrous. Knowing what i know now, i would have gone to a solid roller right away the motor would of made more power and pulled higher in the rpm. The Intake was a holley strip dominator, but it needed a 2 " spacer to make it work real well. Hope that helps you.
jester1 03-21-2007, 09:37:04 PM thank you sir! Like I said priviously I dont want to reinvent the wheel just lube it up pretty good.
Grumpy 427 03-21-2007, 10:49:41 PM Thanks for the compliments everyone. I appreciate it.
jester1 03-22-2007, 12:17:12 AM Now you just have to bite your nails and wait until the track opens.. Have fun
Are you sure you dont want to fog it just a little;)
P.s. How big a shot were you running with the 427, what did it run without.
Grumpy 427 03-22-2007, 12:47:35 AM the cam in the motor was designed to run better on the bottle as opposed to N/A.the converter wasnt big enough for N/A and i needed 4.88 gears.
so on the motor the car ran 11.72@115. on the 150 shot it ran 10.37 @ 127. then 9.92 @ 130 on the 250 shot. Now if i would have known what i know now about nitrous tuning, it would of gone a lot faster.
jester1 03-22-2007, 01:28:53 AM thanks again!!!
