View Full Version : Is this Cam a waste of time?

I have a Comp Cams dual energy cam (.211/.221 @.050 duration - .442/.465 lift.) on order from Summit, for my stock '77 LM1 350. I'm also installing a Performer intake as well. Is this cam just too close to the stock cam, in other words, will it be worth the swap, from a performance, and idle notice, point of view. Or, should I go for something with a little more duration and lift. The car is a stick w/factory 3.73's. Comp Cams advertizes this cam as a good all around performer, with a lopey idle. I'm just wondering if I will notice that.

That is an excellent choice for use with stock cylinder heads.

I'm with Lowend, with a stock motor and performer intake, your cam choice is correct. Don't make the common mistake of "over camming" a motor to make it sound good or go faster. It's all a coordinated effort.

It may look mild, but that cam has about 10-15* more duration than your stock cam and about .050 more lift. Good choice for a nearly stock motor.

The idle may be a little "choppier" but it won't lope. Nor do you want it to. By the time you put enough cam in a stock (low compression, stock heads) motor to hear it lope you've already gone too far for making good power.

i built to engines this year one with l71 cam which is a slightly modified z28 cam and the other a 284 grind with 486 lift and 246 duration one in a 350 the stock in the 350 with basic 882 heads and the other in a 327 with 58 cc heads and blue printed rotating assembly the
well the stock cam done very well and the bigger cam has been a hassle compensate s u deal with torque converters and a rough idle and a more high end power band and don't forget cams can be very cranky or unfriendly to day to day driving
something else u will see a closser to stock grind is made to go from 0-60 a performance is built for top end so if u are looking for street performance a stock grind with larger lift would do u well

Thanks for all the input guys, it's appreciated. Sounds like I'm going with a good choice. I originally was going to have a local shop handle installing the cam, manifold, etc., but his price for labor was crazy. So, I'm doing it myself. It's been awhile since I've done a job like this, and with kids and a family now, spare time is at a minimum. Oh well, I'm going for it. If I need assistance, I'll be sure to reach out for answers.
