I have this 268H in my 355 and heard it will have a fairly choppy idle. Compression will be low...about 8.5:1 - ish (for now). Anyone have clues as to what it might sound like?

Just curious.

I love this site.

A 268 won't sound very rough at all unless you have headers and an exhaust system. I have a split pattern 272 duration cam and it idles almost like a stocker in my truck. I've got a stock exhaust on it, and the thing purrs at idle.

I'm runnin the 268H in my 355 in the Z28 and it has a very nice sound.

I'm runnin factory manifolds and exhaust but with Vortec heads and 10.3:1 comp ratio.

I definatly has a rumpity idle.

Oh I guess I didn't think of mentioning that it will have full-length Flowtech headers. As for the exhaust system...well...your guess is as good as mine - and I'm open to opinions.

I've been eyeing the Pypes 2.5" x-pipe system and transverse system that they have going on, and have heard good things about the American Thunder system. (I AM looking for 2.5"...does Summit carry 2.5" systems?)

I have it in my old 350 Z28 engine. Other than headers, dual exhaust, and ignition and carb tweaks, the engine was stock. The cam definitely has a louder, noticeable sound with a slight lope compared to stock.

I believe when my engine was built I had a 268 or similar crane grind. I have headers and 2 1/2" on my 79 and it doesnt have much of a lope. My old summit cam was like 224 @.50 and it loped way more with my old engine. Infact my 79 with 268 sounds like my 80 with 305 with headers and duals.

SD380, I'm also using a 268 (extreme energy)
When you get it fired up, let us know what it sounds like. I've been told it has a rumpity rumpity grin. I've a little to do b4 mine will be ready to put in my 78Z

Fixin' a 77Z,78Z and arguing with my 80Z.Some yayhu has a set of lug nuts on the front that nothing fits. (see my article under wheels, tires section)

HEY D Stroud, I am looking at vortec heads with that cam and the rest a stock 350. What kind of numbers are you getting for power?

I have the XE268 and I believe that there is a noticeable difference between it and what my crate motor originally came with. I am running pypes 2.5" exhaust with a x-pipe and dynomax ultraflows. These end just before the axle. I think that the car sounds great.

I've never had it on a dyno but trust me it makes TONS of torque.

I can be rollin along in 1st gear at about 20-30 mph and nail it and it will absoultly melt the tires.
I guarantee that combo will put a smile on your face.

Man I wish I had some money for some Vortecs...I just have a set of 882s that are going on until I can afford the good stuff.

Can you get a sound clip at all? I'm curious as to what the Ultraflows sound like with this setup. I've heard good things about those mufflers, how much are they and for someone with...well...not a lot of money...should I buy the system w/o mufflers and spring for the Ultraflows?

Are these the *UltraFlo (Dynomax) mufflers ever-body's been talkin about?

I had a question about that filler stuff...does it burn off/eventually degrade the muffler?

I have the 355, 268 vortec head combo on my 80Z and enjoy the power. I also have the American Thunder system and it is a little loud in the car for my taste. I'm have just been getting it out on weekends trying to finish the body, I will have to have my wife drive it around the hood so I can see what it sounds like rollin. I also have PJ noisy gear drive in it and I feel for the A/C guy when he goes to charge my system next month.

I had a ultra flo on a import car and for me it was awesome. That stuff wont burn out unless maybe a fire shoots that far back. I also had a magnaflow ss on a import and I like the magnaflow a lil better because it was the same price or cheaper and was polished stainless steel and internaly similar to the ultra flo but the magnaflow was fully welded.

Mwilson,

Your car sounds great. When you said you cam is a 266, do you mean the advertised duration? or is that the duration at .050. Or, do you mean that's the grind/part number. Thanks.

I recently picked up another set of Vortecs for $175.00. Then spend another $180.00 for upgraded springs and machine shop bill to set em up.

There are some deals out there, just gotta keep lookin. Both sets that I've bought did'nt need new valves or guides or anything like that just the better springs.

Yep. Thats whats good about the magnaflow staight throughs. They are very similar in design, but the MF's are stuffed with stainless steel, it won't burn out over time.

Unfortunatly right now, I can't get a sound clip of the car. I am in the middle of re-wiring the whole car and swapping belt set ups. I will try to keep this in mind whenever I can start the car up.

I've got a 268 in my 454, and if you want to meet up sometime, you can listen then. No driving it, though http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

It has a fairly lopey idle, but it works with a stock converter and still provides enough vacuum to run power brakes.

Are you kidding me? The only big block I've experienced was in a friend's flatbed. And I wasn't even driving. Get me behind the wheel of a Camaro with Dark Side power and I might kill...something. Haha jk.

I have the 268/vortec combo in a 355. Sounds simalar to mwilson's. 2 1/2 mandrel bent to x-pipe 3 chamber 50 series flowmasters(muffler shop guy sold them for 20 bucks a peice) 2 1/2 all the way out, exiting between leaf spring and quarter panel. An X-pipe won't hide the cam. Hooker comp headers.

I also have the 355/vortec/268 combo. Sounds very simalar to mwilson's. Hooker comp headers,2.5" mandral bent to X-pipe,3-chamber 50-series flows (muffler guy sold them to me for $20 a peice)2.5" tail pipesall the way back exiting between the leaf spring and quarter panel.X-pipe won't "hide" the cam.Could have gone bigger, but I'm happy with the power.

Those fancy NEW high-zoot, turbo-shaped, glasspack mufflers probably cost a heck of a lot more then regular, good old-fashioned W/D/T smooth perforated inner pipe glasspacks and unless they are 3" in and out, they probably flow like the W/D/T jobbers do anyway!!!!!!

But I think the biggest the W/D/T come in is 2.5" in and out!!

My uncle has the xe268 cam in his 65 nova. The car has a .30 over 350, 9.5:1 comp, vortec heads, performer intake, 670 street avenger, headers, 40 series flows, M-22 rock crusher 4 speed and 3.73s. The car has Tons of torque every where. Its so fun to drive. I have a sound clip of it if someone can host it. I plan on doing a similar setup with my 67, but I want to run the xe274 cam. Do any of you have sound clips of it?

Holy crap! That's going to be almost EXACTLY like my setup. Well, ideally...like, in the future. Grr I want Vortecs.......! (cries)
