Ok, so I've been driving the POS around a little bit recently, and I've noticed that for some reason, when the car is warmed up (not even hot, so I'm sure it's not a vapor problem) but it's hard to start. In fact, it almost feels as if there's no fuel. I hit the pedal a few times, and it cranks fast, like there's nothing. It often sounds like it's not firing a single cylinder, and some other times it will fire briefly like there's fuel.. but only a little.
I noticed today that with the old Holley, the clear fuel filter would be half empty (half full?) when the car was shut off. But today I noticed that the filter was totally full.. making me wonder if the fuel in the carb had ran back into the line and emptied the carb.
It's a mechanical fuel pump, so if the carb is emptying out, then I have to crank it regardless just to get the fuel level in the carb back up.. which is why I'm wondering...
Just for a little more confusion.. when the car is cold, like today the first time I fired it up.. no hesitation.

The Carter style carbs are more mysterious to me than the good ol Holleys.
Oh, one more thing.. I just remembered that the elect choke isnt hooked up. Never has been actually.

I'd more suspect coil and ignition. The AFB type carbs have no gaskets below the fuel level, and can't leak or drain back. If you have a lean tip in and the accelerator pump is shot, then that could be an issue. As would an inproperly adjusted choke (not opening up all the way once the motor is warm). But if all that is right, more likely I'd suspect a weak coil / ignition system that get's weaker with underhood temps. Not uncommon.

Later today (after my graveshift nap..) Im gonna check out the choke... Maybe for sh!ts and giggles I'll actually wire the thing up...
The last time it happened, I pumped the pedal quite a bit cause I was thinking ignition... I pumped it a lot and figured that I should be able to notice the cranking speed slow down at least a tiny bit.. but it kept turning over really fast... which is why I've been looking more towards the fuel.

To be honest... I've never really been a fan of the performance of this carb, but when I was finishing up the motor install, the Holley was leaking, so instead of dealing with it, I went with the Eddy. Maybe it's due for a rebuild kit...
