I need to know what Temperature Sender is used for the stock temp gauge in the dash, it's a 79 Z28 with a torker II intake on a 350, the previous owner used a plug and cut the wires, I will have to trace them from the dash and should I go with the water neck style of mounting it or ? Thanks

So you want to know what color the wire is for the stock sender for the 79Z ?

78 engine comp't (same as 79 for the most part)

The part number for the 1979 Z28 sender ( w/ gauges) is 8993106. This number may have been superceded over the years, but it'll get you in the right direction.

Stock mounting is between number 1 and 3 exhaust ports on the drivers side cylinder head. Wire color is green. If you have a/c the compressor clutch also uses a green wire, but it's slightly darker.

Obviously the heads have been off this car before, I have a sender located on the passenger side head between 6 & 8 exhaust, I returned it to that side when I rebuilt it. I was told that was the oil light sender, I bet that is located on the back of the block behind the intake, I had assumed the temp sender was in the intake near the water neck since there was one there with the top broke off, bet he used it as a plug.

The diagram that rscamaro73 sent shows a dark green wire for the temp sender, also shows a dark green to the horn which was also cut, it did have AC but it was removed and…that wire is cut and mixed in, I'm happy that I only need to test the green ones.

Thanks guys, this helps a great deal.

sawyer61,

Yup, the oil pressure sender is located on the back of the block behind the intake.

The horn wiring is a 14ga dark green.

The a/c wire is a 16ga dark green with a white stripe.

The temp sender is a 20ga dark green SXL wire.

Perhaps the wire gauge size might help you out.

Got it and it works!!!!
Now I need to make it look better than the wire wrapped around the end with tape covering it.

The horn wire will be easy to trace since it is a heavy gage dark green wire, just that none are through the fire wall and my back cannot handle working under the dash (it’s a bitch get'n old), so that will have to wait until I can get my daughter to do it. She told me that they have her do all the under dash work in her auto shop class since she is the smallest, her last one was one of those hybrids, can't imagine the electrical nightmare that would be.

Thanks guys, you came through like I figured you would.

Jeff
