okay now here for my main question involving this thread

the guy with the mustang no longer has the transferable registration for it he has owned the car for the past 20 years and doesnt have the transferable registration any more what would he have to do in order to get a new one ?

last i talked to the guy he said he really doesnt want to bother with geting a new one if he doesnt get one how would i register the car in ny would i just need a bill of sale to register it there ?

Because of the age, there is no title, the registration is the title so to speak, and its transferable. With that stated, before you buy the car, call up one of the professional title companys that exist. They pretty much take a bill of sale and do all the paper work necessary to get a registration and actually register the car for you. Its gonna cost you a few bucks, but they specialize in this stuff and they were located in Albany. I havent used them in about 10 years, but they were quite popular with the used car companys.

he would have to do paperwork for a lost registration, and i'd still recommend a company that does it professionally . otherwise the process will drag on forever if it isnt done right.

well if he got a a new registration for it then that would be as good as a title and i could use that to register/title it :)

I found this on another site. I too need to title a pre-73 car with no papers. I don't have first hand experience, but here it is for what it's worth:

New York

Titiling here is fairly simple, as there are no titles for motor vehicles 1972, and prior. The rules are less strict than other states, but the basics of basics. If you have a reproduction body, and it came with an MSO, you can stamp the MSO vin onto the frame, then get a trace of the new vin, take it to the motor vehicle's with a couple of forms that they can give you, have somebody else fill them out, and sign them, fill the bill of sale out as though they sold the vehicle to you, and after all is said, and done you will get a 30 day non transferrable registration which after 30 days turns into a transferrable. There is no police verification necessary. There are more correct ways of titling as a home built vehicle, but this way is quicker. The same process goes for 1972, and prior motor vehicles that have a lost registration, only use the vehicles vin number.

I have used International Title Service in the past... and it is pretty painless. The owner, Joe, is a nice guy and turns things around very quickly... unfortunately, he is the only on-line service I have personally used so I can't really comment on any others.

that was actualy my first choice in title companys what exactly did you need to send him ? and how long did it take to get the title ?
