Well guys I just drained the oil out of the suspected over full 396ci. I didnt take the filter off since it was new. How much oil should I add? the pan is a 4 quart I referenced so Im guessing 4 quarts?? Thanks again for the help!

The CORRECT way to do this is to fill her up with 4 quarts, start her up and run her for a bit and then shut her off and let her sit for say 5 minutes, then check the oil AND top her off to the full mark!!

I say this b/c a lot of the filters we use nowadays, may not be quart ones and this way you will know it is right at the full mark!!

This used to be the way real full service gas stations did it when you came in after having you shut your car off. The attendant would wash your windshield and then check your oil and top it off accordingly..

I had one that the dip stick was changed and it didn't read right. First time I changed the oil, I filled the new oil filter and put it on, then put the remainder of the five quarts in. Started it up, shut it down, pulled the dip stick and wiped it off, restuck the stick and noted where the level was and took an electric scribe and made a new mark for my full mark.
