Thanks Hulk 74RAT 03-13-2007, 12:54:17 AM hulk,, i would use heat on the rod small ends to assemble them,, not a press. it's not likely that the sides of the rods and the inner edges of the pistons are flat or exactly 90* to the pin bore and can distort the two pin bores from each other when pressing them together. they can end up tight and not pivot freely. and in some cases if not square enough,, can crack a piston. i've done them with a torch a bunch,, or even on a gas stovetop works ok. just before they turn blue. said to get them to about 250*+ it won't really hurt them if they get blue,, but it looks funny. scotchbrite takes of the blueing. usually about 4-5 minutes a rod gets em' hot enough. let me know if you stick one!! he he. practice on a scrap piston/rod first. gotta be quick and fluid with your movements to get it in there though. make sure all parts are clean and dry before heating and installing,, then quench/cool it with a squirt of motor oil at the place/sides between the rod and piston as soon as it's in place to make the rod grab the pin. then set it aside for the next one. gotta get it centered pretty fast though. hope it helps. They will have a specific heater that bring the small end to a certain temp, the a hydraulic press to put piston/rod/pin together without damaging either. Cost is minimal compared to messing up a set. IMHO |
