I got a 80 Camaro with a 305 in it now. It was a a/c car. No a/c now. I need suggestions for alt brackets. I have no accesory hole for the alt bolt where it screws in to the head. Previous owner really fubared the accesory hole. I need some suggestions on after market alt brackets that dont require being bolted to the head.
Question 2 since I dont have a alt belt on right now I have no power steering or fan. I looked on my 79 camaro and the power steering belt goes to the crank pulley but on my 80 the power steering belt goes to the fan/water pump pulley. Which one is correct? Which one is better?

Would this work? Has anyone used this or seen this used? Would this work with the regular stock upper alt bracket? As Im looking this bracket goes behind the alternator and mounts to the block? Stupid question but would my car have a long water pump?

My son has an '81 but we swapped the engine to a 350 and have '462 heads with no accessory holes. We used the stock alternator bracket, just used a short bolt on the lower bracket instead of bolting it all the way through to the head. It did break a lower bracket after 2 years of daily driving though.

For the power steering, I made a bracket. The lower bracket is just a U shape cut out of a plate of steel. It bolts to the block with long spacers I made out of some steel tubing, goes under the power steering pump, and bolts up with 1 bolt on the lower outside of the pump. For the upper adjustable part of the bracket I cut a slot in a steel bar and bolted it to one of the water pump bolts. The other end with the slot bolts up to one of the upper power steering pump holes. It all works OK, but it is not great. It was cheap though http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif. The pump shakes a little, but it is certainly usable.

This car has a single belt from the crank to the water pump, and the to the alternator. A second belt goes from the crank to the power steering pump. I have always thought it would be better if we had 2 belts on the water pump, but we have not had any trouble with thrown belts.

I'd drill & heli-coil the bolt hole that the alternator uses as the fulcrum bolt. That's a rather important one. Aftermarket brackets cost megabucks, especially compared to a heli-coil repair kit. There's plenty of room to work on those bolt holes under the hood, too. Just don't drill too deep- measure the depth of the factory bolt hole and put a piece of tape around your drill bit at that same depth so you don't go too deep and "strike water."

As far as mounting the PS pump with the A/C brackets gone, I'll point out that you can STILL go to a Chevy parts counter and look up the brackety in their computer system- diagrams/pictures/part numbers and all. Look up your same year car but WITHOUT factory A/C and see what the bracketry looks like that the factory uses. You may be surprised to find that many of these brackets are STILL AVAILABLE from GM. Even if they're not it will give you a good idea how to build your own.

You have to drill the hole a little oversize for a heli-coil. You could probably go one or two sizes larger and still use a heli-coil.

You would just have to drill the hole in your bracket a little larger too.

Try www.alangrovecomponents.com (http://www.alangrovecomponents.com) . I have there mid mount for the alternator. They have another bracket in there catalog that works with the mid mount that you bolt to your water pump if you do not have accessery bolt holes in your cylinder head. They also have a power stearing bracket that bolts to the block not the cylinder head. When i put the power stearing pump back in my car i am going to buy one for myself.
