Honestly, making torque with a 400 is like falling off a log- it WILL make torque, you just gotta determine where you want it- down low, in the middle or way up high. badazz81z28 04-29-2005, 06:40:00 PM If you have the budget 3 letters A.F.R. heads. JMO dont get offended. I would not buy cheap heads if I had a 400SB. I know someone will say " hey get some vortecs " and they are good heads but man I would want to go nuts on a 400CI. like ~450-500hp ~550ftlbs TQ browen 04-30-2005, 12:39:00 PM A.F.R.??? 550 ft/torq??? I'm very interested. How does this work/where do I get them? badazz81z28 04-30-2005, 10:49:00 PM Check out the site www.airslowresearch.com (http://www.airflowresearch.com) Very good heads. over 500hp on 92-93 octane! 406ci Chevy Dyno Packages Power at Flywheel RPM Torque H.P. 2500 3000 3500 4000 4500 5000 5500 6000 463 468 457 465 534 540 510 483 220 267 304 354 457 514 534 551 Dyno Test Criteria Horsepower: Engine: Heads: Compression: Carburetor: Ignition: Cam: Exhaust: Fuel: 550 HP 406 Street Engine 406ci AFR CNC Cyl. Now what exactly will need to be done to the block? What Cam do I need, again, I'm totally new to the engine side of things. Did you spec the 210's for any particular reason? And how did you find the 406 buildup? I'm going to keep lurking around there site. Thanks again. browen 05-02-2005, 07:27:00 AM K, found the buildup page. But what pistons are they using? is it bored over? I've got the MSD setup already, I've got an aftermarket cam, not sure what at the moment, it will probably end up at the Swap section. And the bottom end build up, anyone know what that is? There's nothing on the site, does anyone know of anyone running this setup, or similar? And as far as pump gas? If you drop the octane from 93 to 89, would it still work with less horses, or because of the compression ratio will it not work at all? Thanks again for all the help, now I need subframe connectors!!! [This message has been edited by browen (edited May 03, 2005).] Damon 05-03-2005, 11:42:00 AM I would anticipate that the bottom end is really good components. You wouldn't have to duplicate it exactly, but you shouldn't expect to be making 550+ HP with a stock crank and rods that are in your motor now. Pistons in those motors are probably flattops to hit ~10:1 compression and are probably top quality forged units. The heads are pretty expensive ($1900+ depending on options) The cam setup is expensive- retrofitting a roller cam into an earlier (400) block is gonna set you back close to $1000, versus a flat tappet setup that would be about $150. So, those are not what I would call cheap engines. And you still didn't mention a budget figure. I've never seen a successful project happen without a budget plan (unless it's unlimited, which few of us have the funds for). [This message has been edited by Damon (edited May 03, 2005).] |
