I have a set of 462 double hump heads that i would like to have mild porting work done to cleanup the runners. The machine shop told me I would need a valve job if I remove the valves to reseal the valves. I thought as long as you put the valve back in the same location it will be ok. Is the machine shop correct. I only have about 2,000 miles on the heads since the last valve jobs. Thanks

Where you run into problems is that it is real easy to nick the seats when doing your porting. You should probably freshen the valve job while in there. It shouldn't be much work if they are that fresh, maybe they could give you a discount since it won't take long to clean them up. Unless someone gets into the seats while porting that is. Maybe you could find a set of heads that aren't done and have them worked over then resell your current ones the way they are. Jeff

Swing by your local autoparts store and pick up a lapping stick and some medium lapping compound and go to work. A matte grey finish means you're in business, nicks will show up as untouched cast iron.

Yeah, just "lap" the valves yourself.
