GetMore 03-08-2007, 11:09:53 AM If you use a GM system you will need to replace the fan, but you should be able to keep the shroud. The water pump turns in the opposite direction, so the fan does as well. I'm sure those multiple belt systems work well, but I personally do not think there should be more than one belt. If I install a serpentine belt system I want one belt, with a self tensioner. Nice and simple. Otherwise I'll stick with the v-belts. But, that's just me. For less than $200 you can get a complete GM serpentine system, used, with everything you need. For less than $800 you can get everything, including the A/C compressor, alternator and P/S pump (but no fan), new, from GM resellers like Scoggin Dickey, Summit, or others. jayb53guy 03-08-2007, 01:36:25 PM I want to change over to a serpentine system for my 350 smal block. Can i still use my fan and fan stroud and do i need a mid-mount system? Thanks You can still get a fan on there with some minor "tweaking" but IMHO it will look sort of wrong. I just installed mine and I am waiting on electric fans to get here. If you want pics or anything let me know. Eaglefixer 03-08-2007, 01:37:59 PM Pic's please Thanks jayb53guy 03-08-2007, 02:27:09 PM Heres a couple. Its a pretty straight up swap. I spent about $525 for everything, belts, hardware...etc. You can get your mechanical fan on the waterpump pulley if you leave the cap off that pulley. The only hting I am still contemplating is one of the brackets on the PS pump goes to a hole on the water pump boss that is not threaded. I could use a long bolt and go all the way through, but I think it is secure enough with the 2 brackets. I am monitoring the belt tension to see that it holds. I have already hammered it on the street and it all holds up good. Like I said earlier, I have no fans right now, so I haven't driven more then a couple miles. Anyway, here ya go... http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r40/jayb53guy/new.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r40/jayb53guy/new1.jpg cmonson 03-08-2007, 03:59:36 PM go grab all of the front pieces off of a 4.3L van. It will bolt right on. Probably about $100 from the wrecker. Eaglefixer 03-08-2007, 07:06:43 PM I like the chrome pieces that jay has. but thanks for the info. 77LT1 03-08-2007, 09:29:53 PM I got my serpentine off of a mid 90's Caprice. I paid exactly $100 for the whole thing...brackets/studs/bolts/accessories etc. The brackets are aluminum so you can sandblast and get them powdercoated or just paint them. They look great when you're done. That would be the cheapest route to go. There are plenty of companies that sell the expensive billet ones but I was just too cheap to spend the money. As far as the fan goes, I bought a fan for a '94 S-10 and bolted it up. I did have to trim the shroud a little bit, but it looked factory. (cut it back to the first rib? on a V8 shroud) It cooled fine here in FL. Bryan woody80z28 03-08-2007, 11:14:39 PM go grab all of the front pieces off of a 4.3L van. It will bolt right on. SpeedAddict02 03-09-2007, 12:25:05 AM here is mine.. it is a 3rd gen serp setup.. had the brackets and pullies powdercoated "near chrome".. added a smog and a/c delete pulley, used a stock 3rd gen belt. I also have a stewarts reverse rotation wp, 3rd gen p/s pump,cs-130 alt and elec fan..(taurus).. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d54/speedaddict02/DSCF1674.jpg 77LT1 03-09-2007, 05:16:10 PM Same basic setup I had. Can't beat it for the $$$. B 79maroberlinett 04-01-2007, 01:43:57 AM Hey guys i got a complete system off a 93 Chevrolet Astro van 4.3L serpentine belt system. Now it had A/C i figure ill just eliminate that but would this work on my 79 350 Camaro? Some ppl have told me it won't i want to know for sure before sinking in anymore money any help would be Sweet. Thanks in advance to all the life savers that'll help me out of a bind. Also how bout install tips Air_Adam 04-01-2007, 03:07:23 AM http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r40/jayb53guy/new1.jpg You can get the EXACT SAME setup for the alternator/crank/waterpump from almost any SBC powered car from '85-87. I took the same basic setup off an '85 Trans Am... its not billet, but it uses the same setup as the V-belt pulley setup that a 2ndgen would have come with - but it uses a 5-rib serpentine style belt for the crank/alternator/waterpump. Cost me $20 plus a new belt. Air_Adam 04-01-2007, 03:13:24 AM http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/537/imm350ol6.jpg It doesn't show alot, but this is a pic of the factory 5-rib setup. Uses the wide belt for the alt/crank/water pump. Uses a V-belt for power steering. Air_Adam 04-01-2007, 03:18:46 AM Heres a much better pic of the factory setup, but its too big of a pic to post, so heres a link. http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/attachments/carburetors/125975d1158187658-post-your-carbd-motor-100_0287.jpg I use the factory setup and I like it... been north of 6000 many times with it and it worked just fine. 79maroberlinett 04-01-2007, 12:06:27 PM So from what i gather i can use the set-up i got off the astro van 4.3L but i need the 3rd gen A/C delete pulley and all should mount up now my only concern is the power steering lines to the steering box? |
