Sorry guys, this isn't Camaro related....but I have a few questions about engine shop costs. I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L straight six engine. It is in need of a rebuild.

I will be removing the engine from the car myself and removing all accessories. Basically I will be giving them a long block. Here is what I am having done:
1. Bore cylinders .030 over.
2. Install crank kit.
3. Rebuild head.
4. New Oil Pump

If the shop was to supply all the parts, what should it cost? They gave be an estimate of about $1500. Does that sound reasonable? That seems a bit high to me. I can buy a rebuilt from Jasper for slightly less and it comes with a warrenty.

My cost for a crank kit is about $150, the pistons are about $125. Oil pump is cheap also.

I may just give him the block to bore and the head to rebuild and do the rest myself. What will that cost?

Seems a bit high to me. I will check our book in morning and tell you what we charge. You should be getting a warranty with that. I did notice you didn't mention a lot of the work the guy will be doing for you though. Such as hottanking, pressure testing, Hanging pistons on rods, ANd installing cam bearings amongst other things. You could save yourself money by just having the work done you can't do such as the boring and crank turning, but noone is going to warranty something you bolt together, Jeff

"Basically I will be giving them a long block"

That's why its $1,500. To me that sounds about like the right price. Labor is high!!!

Your having them to tear down the engine, clean all the small parts, machine parts for rebuild, supply parts, and rebuild it.

I do engine builds out of my home on the side and charge $600 labor just to blueprint and build engine.. They supply parts or funds for parts, and they have machine work done or give me the money to have machine work done for them. If I have to tear engine down that's another $100 for labor.

The common prices for machine work are..
bore and hone $8-15 per cyl.
hot tank clean $40-50
install pistons on rods $30-40
install freeze plugs and cam bearings $30-40
turn crank $50-100

Thats $250 for just the machine work for the short block. Then you said rebuild head, ok theres abother $30-40 to hot tank head, the you got valve job price, etc

So about $350 in just machine work.

Then add in parts, then labor and you up in the $1300-1800 range.

Not sure what std. labor rate is, but from talking to shop owners around here I can tell you it aint cheap.. $60-130 an hour. And most will set min. amount of hours. Like if it don't take them but 20 min to tear dowm the engine, most liky you'll pay for a 1 hour min. on that (maybe even 2 hour min.)
